Intranet
Intranets are used to share information that needs
to be quickly and easily disseminated
Such as in-house newsletters or announcements,
company policies, phone lists, etc.
An Intranet is a locally owned and operated
Internet whose access is carefully controlled.
Its objective is to enhance company operations
through improved data access management.
Internet Vs Intranet

Internet Intranet

- Global - Internal
- More then million host - In 100 000 host
- Access by public - Private
- Less security - Secure
- No control - Control by organization
Myths on Intranet
Intranets are cheap PC upgrade need $$
initial costs in setting up an intranet might seem low
If you expect your intranet to grow, be prepared for
the costs involved with the growth
Build and they will come dont know / remember
You will have to use a lot of promotional techniques
not only to get people to visit your intranet, but for
them to keep coming back
Intranets are for BIG organizations
Is also for smaller companies
Platform independent - view by any OS browser
once you get into advanced applications and start using the
latest technologies (Java, ActiveX etc.) you have to fine tune
your applications to support a "certain" type of browsers
Intranets require an Internet connection run w/o internet
You can use web servers, browsers, mail servers etc, but you
do not have to be connected to the Internet unless you want
your intranet users to access content from the Internet
Intranets require little maintenance grow fast
If you do not have a good plan and growth strategy in
place, be prepared to spend a lot of time on small,
routine maintenance tasks
Intranets are not secure
If your intranet is not connected to the Internet and you
do not provide dial in access, you have a lot less to worry
about
Even with an incoming connection, you have a number of
options to secure your intranet. Firewalls, SSL (Secure
Socket Layer), password authentication, IP blocking and
other techniques are available secure from intruder
Intranets are an IS "thing"
Let IS setup and manage the content but also allow
the publishers to use their own judgement and
creativity to come up with content.
Intranets are internal webs
An intranet is not limited to a web site
You can use simple technology like enterprise-wide
email; newsgroups, chat etc. which are all based on
TCP/IP protocols, within your intranet
