Spanish I Study Guide

Below I have compiled a list of important topics that you must study and be familiar with
for the final exam. It is important to note that you must know both Spanish and English
meanings of each word, so be sure to study this in order to ensure that you perform the
best possible.

Los Animales
Be able to recall all animal related vocabulary
See vocab sheet.

Ser & Estar


Be able to determine which is permanent and which is temporary
Ser: permanent
Estar: temporary
Be able to identify the meaning of each letter of PLACE and which verb this
describes
Describes estar
Meaning of each letter:
P: position
L: location
A: action (present progressive)
C: condition
E: emotion
Be able to identify the meaning of each letter of DOCTOR and the verb this
describes
Describes ser
Meaning of each letter
D: date
O: origin
C: characteristics
T: time
O: occupation
R: relationship
Be able to describe how the present progressive is formed
Estar + progressive verb
How I form verbs in the progressive tense
-AR: stem + ando
-ER & -IR: stem + iendo
Example: Nosotros estamos aprendiendo espaol.
Gustar
Be able to describe how the ending of gustar is determined and apply it in context
The subject is the object that is pleasing, not the person who it is pleasing
to.
Example: Me gustan las frutas.
This uses gustan because las frutas is the subject.
Be able to make use of the correct indirect object pronouns with gustar.

Tener
Be able to differentiate between tener and tener que
Tener means to have
Ellas tienen mucho dinero. (They have lots of money.)
Tener que means to have to
Example: Tengo que ir al bao. (I have to go to the restroom.)
Be able to state a persons age using tener
Example: Guillermo tiene 25 aos. (William is 25 years old.)

-AR, -ER, & -IR Verbs


Know meanings of all vocabulary on the verb vocabulary list given in class
See vocab sheet
Understand what a stem and root of a verb are
The root will always be -AR, -ER, or -IR.
The stem is everything before that.
Example: comer (to eat)
Be able to recall verb endings and apply them to verb vocab

Be able to differentiate between regular and irregular verbs


All regular verbs follow the rules of construction that we have described in
class.
Irregular verbs change their stem in the present tense. Irregular verbs to not
follow the same rules as regular ones. It is more helpful to memorize these
because we will not always be able to make a correct conjugation from the
an irregular verb stem and the root determined on the conjugation chart.
Be able to recall which verbs from our vocab list are irregular verbs
The irregular verbs are ser, estar, tener, and poner.
