Summary

Ferris is a teenager that has a unique skill at cutting classes


He wants to skip class one more time before graduation and pretends to be sick to trick his
parents
Ferris invites his friends to join him on an adventure through the city of Chicago
Unfortunately High School Principal Mr. Rooney doesnt believe that he is sick and tries to
catch Ferris
First Major Finding

Personality Theory

Each person has a personality theory that says which characteristics of an individual go with
other characteristics. (Devito, 2013, p. 67)
ex.) if someone is energetic and eager then they are most likely intelligent as well
Ferris Buellers Personality

Ferris is energetic, and likeable, which also makes him intelligent

Perceptual Accentuation

Definition: Perceptual accentuation is the process that


leads us to see and perceive what we want
Who is affected by Perceptual Accentuation

Because this is a state of mind everyone is affected by


their own Perceptual Accentuation, therefore everyone's
is different. At the same time large scale example like
you saw in the video are similar.
Outside sources:According to Fr. Mathews Because of
perceptual accentuation we perceive and remember positive
qualities more than negative ones in self or others.

Impression Management Strategies

Self-presentation, also known as impression management, is the use of behaviors to intentionally

regulate the impressions that observers have of oneself (Lewis, 2005)

-Social rewards and consequences, self-esteem and self concept are all affected by the use of these

strategies.
Impression Management Strategies used by Ferris

Influencing: A way of being persuasive and in control. Ability to influence others

ex: rides, phone call with Cameron, access to car

Image-confirming:You want to be recognized for who you are and so sometimes you communicate to
confirm your self-image (Devito, 2013).

ex: Life of the party, prankster (skipping school)

Fourth Major Finding - Self Fulfilling Prophecy

First Part: Cameron worried that the car will get damaged while the friends use it
Second Part: Cameron was constantly worried while they were out the car was damaged and
was acting like it was damaged
Third Part: The car was totaled

Self Fulfilling Prophecy

First Part: Ferris believing nothing would go wrong


Second Part: Ferris acted as if nothing could possibly go wrong
Third Part: Nothing did go wrong, his day off went off without a hitch
Conclusion

In conclusion, the four major findings that we have


concluded from watching the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off
help us understand how Interpersonal Communication plays a
role in our everyday life consciously and subconsciously.

-These strategies and theories all relate to everyone,


whether we know we are doing it or not. Self-perception is
deeply important to everyone so it is important to
understand how and why we use these.
