Guide for Learning Center (Healthy Habits)

Goal and Objective: The goal of this learning center is to extend students
understanding of global connection and to introduce them to different celebrations
around the world. This learning center meets the NB curriculum requirements for
You and Your World, Unit 3, Outcome 1.3.1.- Students will be expected to
understand, develop, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Procedure for Centre Management: The centre will be set up with the backdrop
behind the material for the activities.

Next students will enter the activity space and they may choose from any of these
activities. Typically, it is best to start with at least one must activity and the
assessment sheet because this section is the content learning section. The activities
are as follows:

Ask Students:
Can you pretend you are waking up in the morning? How does your body feel? Now
pretend you are sitting in the car for a long time. How do you feel? How does your
body feel right now?

Activity:
1. Do some warm-up exercises (run or jump in place).
2. Introduce different stretching moves:
o Stretch UP! (reach up to the ceiling)
o Stretch DOWN! (reach down to your toes)
o Stretch all AROUND! (hold your arms out to the sides and move them

3. Have children take turns tossing the block onto the Stretch Chart to see which
stretch it lands on. All children then stretch the way their Sesame Street
friend is stretching on the chart.
4. Ask, What does it feel like after you stretch your muscles? Check your body
are there any spots you want to stretch more so you can move more
easily?

Process for Designing Center:

First teachers will want to collect a white, three panel backdrop, that can be

easily found at the dollar store. Decoration is up for the teachers interpretation,

however, I set up my backdrop by first putting a whiteboard in the center of my

display right below the title. The whiteboard will be used for making lists of types of

exercises that the students do. Directly below the whiteboard is where I put the

teeth brushing activity, items were placed on with Velcro so that students would be
able to interact. On the left hand side, just below a couple of pictures I put our

sesame street physical activity poem so that students would be able to read that

aloud with me. On the right hand side, I put our super stretch activity which

describes the different stretches that students can do. Just below that I have the

steps for washing hands.

Just in front of my backdrop I will have my container for completed work as

well as all of my handouts (hand washing activity and exercise drawing activity). To

the side I will have my exercise dice activity set up with the hula-hoop out-front on

the floor, this will need lots of room so that students will be able to do activities

around it. I will also have my handwashing simulation that will include a pie tin filled

with water, ground pepper, and soap.

When the students would walk into my learning center I would first start with

my must do activity which will be our super stretch activity. We will all spread out

and start by talking about the different types of exercise that we like to do (I will

write some on the whiteboard). Next we will talk about how it is important that we

stretch to warm up our bodies for exercise. We will do the super stretch activity and

then move to the exercise dice activity where students will be set up near the hula-

hoop. If there is time following this activity, we will move into the should do activity

which is our hand washing steps activity.
