Psychoanalysis of The Picture of Dorian Grey

Bahram, B., & Mahdiyeh T., K. (2015). Oscar Wilde as a Temporal Designer: A Case Study of

The

Picture of Dorian Gray. International Journal Of Applied Linguistics And English

Literature, Vol 4, Iss 2, Pp 199-206 (2015), (2), 199.

Most of the themes approached within criticising this novel is by looking into Wildes

personal life. There has not been many serious attempts to analyze the work from a

narrative

point of view. Along with describing the different types of narrative, the article

references

Passages from the novel and explains them and their use to the writing. This article is

useful to me because I can use the analysis of the passages to further advance my

knowledge of the story and create my own critique of it. I have no purpose for the

narrative explanations other than it provides examples of the text in full explanation.

This presentation begins its focus by talking about Sigmund Freuds psychoanalytic

theory of

the three different human personalities: Id, ego, and superego. The reference focuses on

how

the novel portrays these personalities specific characters throughout the novel. It

illustrates the

way that all humans face the inevitable task of balancing the three parts of the mind in

order to

function in a way that is acceptable to society and ones self. The main conflict in the

novel is

Dorian Grey, having promised his soul in order to live a life of perpetual youth, must

try to

reconcile himself to the bodily decay and dissipation that are recorded in his portrait.

This

reference is useful to me because it also focuses on the personalities of each of the main

characters and that will make it easier for me to psychoanalyze them. Basil Hallward is

idealist

who believes in the innate goodness of mankind and ultimately pays for his optimism

and good
faith with his life. Lord Henry Wotton is ruled by his ID and is a hedonic, selfish

aristocrat.

The Picture of Dorian Grey has the social value of providing a representation of the

consequences one may face if one fails to balance the three parts of the mind.

This article begins by discussing how they will discuss how the notion of the author can

be used as an interpretive tool for critics. In other words, how some aspect of the novel

can become biographical towards the author. This article also talks about how there

were speculations, especially from this novel, that Wilde was homosexual and he tried to

correlate himself into his works; his life struggles becoming his own muse. This aspect of

the reference will help me attempt to psychoanalyze the author himself.

This article focuses on the dark desires and forbidden pleasure are at the centre of The

Picture

of Dorian Gray. Greg Buzwell examines the interplay between art and morality in Oscar

Wildes
novel, and considers its use of traditional Gothic motifs as well as the theories of the new

aesthetic movement. This article possesses a lot of use to me because it talks about the

novels

perceived references of homosexual desire. Id like to psychoanalyze Wildes reasons for

including homosexual tendencies within the novel while he was being speculated himself

and

while the subject was so scandalous during this time.

This reference is just an explanation of what psychoanalytic criticism is and this will help

me

to explain it more efficiently in my paper. The definition, as stated by the reference, is the

Application of psychoanalytic principles in the study of literature, initiated primarily by

Freud.

We cannot claim fully to comprehend even ourselves, why we act as we do, why we

make

certain moral and political decisions, and why we harbor given religious dispositions and

intellectual orientations.

This article focuses on Sigmund Freuds theories of psychology and psychoanalytic

criticism.

Freud developed the different psychological personalities which included ID, ego, and

superego. This reference helps give me insight to how these psychological theories have

to

do with literature and it explains how it helps us to see the concepts in a text that were

most felt

by the author and how these concepts enrich our understanding of the work and, if we

plan to

write a paper about it, to yield a meaningful, coherent psychoanalytic interpretation,

which is

what this article is helping me accomplish.
