How is a City like a Cell?

Curriculum Outcome:
109-13 Explain the importance of choosing words that are scientifically or
technologically appropriate
211-3 Work co-operatively with team members to develop and construct models of
cells
304-5 Distinguish between plant and animal cells

Content learning (I can Statement):

- I can chose appropriate words to describe different scientific ideas
- I can develop and construct models of cells
- I can find the differences between plant and animal cells

Time: 2 Class (90 Minutes)

Materials:
Name:

- Instruction sheet (2 Versions)

- Coloured pencils
- Paper
- Textbooks (if they need help)
- Lesson
-
- Hook: Explanation of how a city might be like a cell
Time: 5 minutes
1. Introduce assignment: Handout the assignment sheets and explain the
direction as on the sheet. Students may be confused as to how a city is like a
cell. Show the image of the example cell city and have students try and figure
out what each building represents and how they have the same functions as
part of the cell. Afterwards, ensure that that everyone understands.
Recommend to students that they should first try and figure out what they
are going to use to represent each part before starting to draw anything.
-
- Content Learning and Critical Thinking:
- Time: 80 minutes
- Behaviour Expectations: Students will work independently and quietly on
their assignments. They may listen to music using headphones if they so
choose. Students will raise their hands if they have questions. I will circulate
the room to ensure all students are working and to answer any questions that
they may have.
1. Students will be creating a city using the different organelles. They will need
to create a description for each of the parts of the city to explain how it
represents a specific organelle. They will have the two classes to complete
this assignment. Students may use their notes or the textbook to complete
the assignment if they need help.
-
- Conclusion: Reminders
Time: 3 minutes
1. Day One: Reminder for students to bring their coloured pencils and that they
will be working on their city again. Students will remain working until
dismissal.
2. Day Two: Reminder for students that the assignment is due on Monday.
Students will remain working until dismissal.
-
- Assessment:
- Summative: Students will be submitting their assignments. Students will be
assessed using a checklist.
-
Name:

- How is a Cell like a City?

- Due:
- Weve been learning all about the functions of the cell; now lets see if
we can apply our knowledge.

- YOUR TASK: To create a city using the organelles as comparisons. You

will draw out the city and write short descriptions as to why you chose
a certain part of the city to represent a certain organelle or process.

- Please be sure to include the following:

- Cell Membrane - Endoplasmic Reticulum

- Cytoplasm - Mitochondria
- Nucleus - Carrier Proteins
- Vacuoles

- Example: You could represent chloroplasts as solar panels.

Chloroplasts are where the process of photosynthesis takes place
which converts sunlight into energy for the cell. The solar panels are
converting the sunlight into energy for the city.

- Checklist Requirements: MAKE SURE YOU CHECK EVERYTHING

OFF

- Did I represent?
- ____ Cell Membrane - ____ Endoplasmic Reticulum
- ____ Cytoplasm - ____ Mitochondria
- ____ Nucleus - ____Carrier Proteins
- ____ Vacuoles
- ____ I provided a detailed description of each part of the city

- ____ I have double checked my work to ensure that there are no

spelling errors and my descriptions make sense

- ____ I was creative in the representation of my city

- ____ My city is neatly coloured

- ____ My work is neat, clear, and easy to read

- ____ I answered all the questions to the best of my ability

- Questions:

1. Describe something else you could compare to the cell and the
different organelles.
-
-
-

-
-
-
-
2. What could you compare the cell wall to?

3. Which cell is your city representing (animal or plant)? What changes

would you make to represent the other?
