SULIS
1.Introduction
Our mini Company is called Sulis after the Celtic god of the Sun. Our
product is a solar powered phone charger that will charge your phone
while you cycle using the power of the sun. The solar powered phone
charger can also be used while out camping, hiking etc.

2.Summary
Our choice of product was good as it encouraged people to stay active
and it tackles the problem of climate change as it is renewable energy. It
is a very useful product as the batteries in most smartphones run out very
quickly and many people like to have their phone with them when going
on long cycles so they can contact someone if an accident happens. For
instance, if they get a flat tyre they will have to contact someone to pick
them up and repair their tyre.
Everyone in our group enjoys going for cycles but our phones battery
never lasts the full length of the cycle so we came up with the idea of
charging our phone while we cycle. At first we tried to use a computer fan
to charge the phone using wind energy however after several attempts
the fan still failed to generate enough electricity to charge the phone. We
realised that we didnt have enough time to try and fix this problem so we
changed our idea and instead of using wind energy we decided to use
solar energy.
We already had research skills from other projects we had to do in school
over the years so finding information about the product was relatively
easy. Two members over our group had done business studies for their
Junior Cert so we were able to put together the accounts. We had all
worked in groups before so group work wasnt a problem. We had to learn
how to manage our time efficiently as we only had a short period of time
to put everything together. We also had to learn to communicate with
each other.
Some of our customers were students in the school but the majority of
customers were members of cycling clubs and hikers. We promoted our
product through Social Media as well as by word of mouth and on posters.
We took orders for our product and this meant that we didnt take any risk
as we didnt invest any money until we knew we had a sale.
The main difficulty we had was getting our product to work before time
ran out. We started off by trying to use a fan to generate electricity while
you cycle using the wind. We tried several different fans however we
couldnt get it to generate enough electricity to charge the phone. We had
to alter our product to ensure we would have it on time. We decided to
use solar energy instead of wind.

3.Business Structure
There were five members in the group and we all had an equal share in
the company (20%). Michael Donohoe was the CEO. He insured everyone
stayed focused and gave tasks to each member. He also resolved
arguments and took charge of meetings held. He also ordered the
product. Taighe Kelly was in charge of Finance. He put together the
accounts of the company and kept track of expenditure and income. Sean
Murphy was the research and production manager. He was tasked with
sourcing our raw materials at the best possible price while ensuring they
were good quality and could be delivered quickly. Jamie Buckley was in
charge of Marketing and sales. He and Michael Donohoe put together the
survey and carried out market research. Jamie also promoted the product
on social media. Leon Barry Cullen was the Art and Design manager. He

4. Products / services
Sulis is a solar powered battery charger that allows you to cycle your
bicycle while you charge your mobile phone without the hassle of having
to charge your portable charger up, sulis is able to charge your phone
quickly and efficiently and is hassle free! Our product can be used for
many different situations such as hiking, camping etc.

What we found innovative about our product was that it allowed you to
charge your phone without having to have a socket or power. Our product
only requires the energy from the sun to charge your phone. We found
that our product works really well because unlike most portable chargers
you dont have to charge them up every time you use it. This would make
a difference for the people that forget or haven't time in advance to have
their phone or device charged. Also our product works better than a
portable charger and is at an affordable price
We had to make a few adjustments as a result of our marketing research.
At the start of our research to reach our final product we tested a few
different ideas. Our first idea we had was a fan powered mobile phone
charger that would charge your phone without any use of batteries etc. As
time went on and we tested the product it just wasn't working to the
standard that we wanted the fan wasn't big enough and the wind flow
wasn't making the fan spin quick enough. So we decided to research more
and we found the solar mobile phone charger.
We produced our product by all working together and coming up with
different ideas that would make sulis more efficient and eco-friendly.

There were a few difficulties with our first product we couldnt get the
correct fan to power or charge the phone quickly. So after a few attempts
at making the fan powered charger work we decided that we had to come
up with another idea fast so we could get our product advertised and
selling. To deal with this we researched more and more into phone
chargers then we finally found a product that would work without any
hassle and our customers would be happy with, Solar mobile phone
chargers that can be charged with or without plugging into a power
source.
After all members in the group discussed a reasonable price we came to a
conclusion that we could sell our solar chargers for 15 euro each. To buy
the chargers it was costing us around 10 euro a charger. We wanted to sell
them at a reasonable price so our customers would buy them but we also
wanted to make a profit.
5. Marketing/Promotion
Our target market for the product was people with an interest in cycling
that owned a smartphone. Our target market was mainly teenagers but
also people of all ages. We carried out surveys in our school and found
that sixty percent of students in the classes we surveyed would buy our
product. Within that sixty percent, seventy percent said they would pay
fifteen euro for it. We searched online to source the solar powered phone
charger. There were lots of them in China at a low price. We soon realised
however that they would take too long to be delivered. We had to order
them from the UK. This increased the cost price but meant we would have
the product quicker. Our competitors were mainly online as a product
similar to ours wasnt being sold in Ireland.

Mission Statement
We set up our company with the aim of providing our customers with a
useful, efficient and eco-friendly product at a reasonable price. We hoped
to promote physical activity. We aimed to create a product that would
prevent your phone from turning off due to a low battery which meant
that if an accident occurred or you needed to contact someone while out
cycling you wouldnt have to worry about your phones battery being low.
Our product mainly focused on cyclists but it can also be used by hikers,
campers etc.

Unique selling point

Our product is eco-friendly which sets it apart from normal phone chargers
as it is using renewable energy and isnt increasing your electricity bill and
our customer service sets our company apart from other companies.

7.Conclusion
We worked well together and everyone pulled their weight. Teamwork was an
essential part of our mini-company. We had to constantly communicate with each
other and work together to ensure everything went smoothly. We had to
overcome a few difficulties while working together. We found it difficult to agree
on an idea for our product. We voted to decide on our idea. We then chose the
idea of a wind powered phone charger that charges while you cycle your bike.
However, as time went on we couldnt seem to get the idea to work so we
decided to change our idea slightly and use solar energy to power the charger
rather than wind. We developed new skills such as communication, teamwork
and marketing. We also learnt to manage money, manage time, make sales and
be confident. The best advice given to us during this project was to assign tasks
to people and give them a deadline. This helped to make sure everyone did their
role in the mini-company and that they would have it done on time. I would
advise future students doing this project to be sure that your product works and
is fit for purpose. Also make sure that you will have your product fast and from a
reliable source.
