ETHIOPIAN STANDARD ES 93:2001

Foreword

This Ethiopian Standard has been prepared under the direction of the Technical Committee for
Galvanized steel sheets, nails, wires and structural steels (TC 38) and Published by the Ethiopian
Standards Agency (ESA).

Application of this standard is MANDATORY with respect to clauses 5.3.

ETHIOPIAN STANDARD ES 93:2001

1 Scope

This standard specifies the quality requirements, dimensions and sampling of cold drawn mild steel wire of circular
cross-section used for the manufacture of nails..

2 Definitions

In this standard

2.1
wire rod shall mean a semi-finished hot rolled mild steel product capable of being drawn into wire of required
diameter.

2.2
coil shall mean a continuous length of wire drawn and rolled in the form of a reel.

2.3
lot shall mean any quantity of coils of wire of the same thickness from which test samples shall be taken

3 Dimensions

The nominal diameters of mild steel wires shall be as specified in Table 1.

Nominal Diameters, mm

1.00 3.15

1.12 3.55

1.25 4.00

1.40 4.50

1.60 5.60

1.80 6.30

2.00 7.10

2.24 8.00

2.50 9.00

2.80 10.00

4 Tolerances

Tolerances on the nominal diameters of wires shall be as specified in Table 2.

5 Quality Requirements

5.1 Material

The base metal, of which the wires shall be drawn, shall be mild steel complying with the following requirements:

- Phosphorus not exceeding 0.065%

- Sulphur not exceeding 0.060%/

5.2 Manufacture

The wire shall be cold drawn. It shall be drawn to the specified nominal diameter, and shall be sound and free from
splits, surface flaws, scale and other manufacturing defects.

5.3 Mechanical Properties

5.3.1 The tensile strength of the wire shall not be less than 550 N/mm2 (55 kgf/mm 2) when tested according to
clause 7.2.

5.3.2 Wires shall not break or develop cracks when tested according to clause 7.2

6 Sampling

6.1 Samples for test purposes shall be taken at random from lots according to Table 3.

6.2 From one end of the coil or length of wire selected, two separate test pieces, at a distance of not less than 600
mm from the end, shall be cut.

One test piece shall be used for the tensile test and the other for the bend test.

7 Tests

7.1 All the coils samples shall be carefully examined for compliance with the requirements specified in caluse 5.2

7.2 Tensile tests and bend tests shall be conducted according to ES G.B9.310 and ES G. B8.311 respectively.

8 Retest

8.1 Should any of the test pieces first cut from the samples not fulfill the test requirements specified in section 7,
two additional test pieces in respect of each failure shall be taken from the samples.

8.2 Should both the additional test pieces pass the test, the lot represented shall be accepted as conforming to this
standard provided it complies with all the other requirements specified in the standard.

If either of the test pieces fail the retest, the lot shall be rejected.

9 Packing

In order to prevent rust development, finished wire coil may be wrapped with jute Hessian or bituminous paper.

10 Marking

Coils of cold drawn mild steel wires in compliance with the requirements specified in this standard shall bear the
ESA Standards Mark.
