Thank You English 113B

Throughout my 2nd semester at California State University Northridge, my English 113B

class has taught me that a writer cannot quit into becoming a better writer. Many students hate

revising their rough drafts, I am definitely one of those students, but I can say It is a dream

become true after revising your rough draft your writing becomes two times better than your

first. It was quite a transition going from Central American studies 113A to English 113B. The

reason being why English 113B is different in topic not it writing format, Central American

studies focuses more on their culture and community as a whole. Unlike English, this semester

we focused on three projects: project web, project space, and project text. All the three projects

involved space communities (Six flags), web communities (Instagram soccer community), and

text communities (Stereotypes on all Hispanics being Narcos or involved in drug trafficking).

My following projects are composed of two essays. Project web with a Rhetorical

analysis and project text with an argument proposal and annotated bibliography. As I stated

above, a writers writing strengthens when revising their rough drafts. My writing has evolved

this semester by revising my rough drafts. My first semester for my Central American Class, I

did not really take advantage of revising, even though I felt more confident on what I was writing

about because I had a better understand on what the prompt was asking. However, this English

113B class gave us the students the option to write on what we felt was a perfect fit for the

prompt.

In my opinion, I like how professor Lawson created groups to revise our rough drafts.

She would not only make groups, but place us with groups that had similar topics to have a

stronger critique on how to better our writing. This class has helped me in preventing

procrastination, as a college student we have the choice on whether to start on our work early or

start at last minute. However, professor Lawson had us on check with Moodle and the turn in

dates. We would have a Moodle post for our 1st rough draft, 2nd rough draft, and finally our final

essay. I struggled with turning things on time, I honestly would turn them in 20 mins before

class, even though I had my work done two days before turn in time. My biggest problem is not

checking Moodle; I do not keep updated with checking constantly my Moodle unless a friend

reminds me.

As a student, I personally have to work on reading and comprehending the reading. This also

goes for comprehending a prompt because there have been times were I misunderstood a prompt

and failed my essay. Making sure you understand the prompt is the biggest advice I would give

any student, it makes a difference knowing what you will have to be writing about than thinking

you have to write about a certain topic and boom it hits. I always had trouble understanding what

the prompts would ask, for example, for project space asked Think deeply about cultural places

and spaces in the Los Angeleshow they affect and define each other, and how they contribute

to the unique cultural landscape that makes up the greater Los Angeles area. You might be

wondering, the Placita Olvera, in Downtown Los Angeles, would be a great community to write

about. Instead for project space I wrote about the Six Flags community being diverse and open to

anyone. Six Flags in this case did not really help me support the prompt, therefore I would not

want to re-do the essay because I have no understanding on how to better it. English 113B has

helped me become a better writer for my future classes and I am thankful to professor Lawson

for not giving up on her students. I am also thankful for SI and our SI leader Annabelle for

helping our writing get better.
