Abstract

In this paper, I will show the difference between an entrepreneur and accounting major.

Choosing which career path is correct can be a difficult, extensive, and scary experience. In order

to pick the career that is most fitting, there are certain steps that can help to make the process

bearable. The first step should be an evaluation of one's strengths and weaknesses, followed by a

search for jobs that might fit this list. The next step is to compare the top careers in certain

categories such as the following: salary, required education, job security/ openings, and normal

day-to-day tasks. In my paper there are examples of how the average entrepreneur matches up to

an accounting major. I took the approach that these are the two jobs that I will most likely

decide to pursue. In order to find this information, I took to highly respected and officially

published articles and books that were written by experienced authors. Through these

investigations, I was able to better my understanding of the two careers, and which job is the best

fit. Using this knowledge on the two jobs, I am now able to make a more educated decision on

which job to pursue as a young and soon to be college student.

Audience

This paper is a matter of comparing careers, and analyzing which career is a better fit for my

personal needs. The paper is directed to serve as an example for those looking at several careers

as a possible option, as the most efficient and effective method to help with the decision is

comparing the careers. The most significant aspect of the paper that the audience should take

away is the process of comparing two careers and using this information to better their

knowledge of each career path.

Problem

As a student who is getting ready for college, it is time that I begin to look at which career path I

head down. The best time to compare careers is now, as college is a very expensive necessity,

and heading in knowing which career to study for can help ease the cost. The main problem for

me is making the decision of which career is the better option, and this paper displays how I

compared important aspects to better my knowledge.

Solution

The aspects that are looked in this paper are salary, job security/ openings, required education,

and normal day-to-day tasks. These aspects show the major difference to the two jobs and the

information serves as the deciding factor when comparing the careers. This is when a good

decision-making system comes in handy (2017, Para. 2). This system is very important as I

decided which aspects are some of the important ones, but the number of aspects that can be

compared is infinite.

Salary is something important to any career, especially when the two careers are similar.

The average accounting major makes $65,840, a respectable amount for the task at hand. On the

other side, the average entrepreneur makes around $68,000 annually. One key difference is that

accounting majors are typically working for corporations, which means the pay is almost

guaranteed. The entrepreneur is never guaranteed a salary due to the competitive style of

business. Not only is the amount of money important, but the benefits received should be looked

at as well. The more attractive vacation and wellness offerings come at the expense of salary

increases, as wages become stagnant (2017, Para. 3). When salary is increasing at slower rates,

benefits will prove as a need in a career. Accountants receive certain benefits that are given

exclusively by the corporation. The entrepreneur receives benefits from which they believe they

deserved. Working for no one but themselves, entrepreneurs have the ability to decide many

factors of work including: amount of effort, location, and style of work are a few examples.

The entrepreneur and a person who finds a job in the field of accounting face many

different tasks throughout and average day of work. Normally, accountants use a great deal of

math while the entrepreneur faces a day of tough decisions and new events. The accountant has a

more scheduled work day, and the entrepreneur is faced with a journey that is matched by an

adventurer.

A definite view, by contrast, favors firm convictions. Instead of pursuing many-sided

mediocrity and calling it well roundedness, a definite person determines the one best

thing to do and then does it. Instead of working tirelessly to make herself

indistinguishable, she strives to be great at something substantive-to be a monopoly of

one. (Thiel, 2014, page 62)

The entrepreneur faces decisions that can define the career that is led. I have found that an

entrepreneur must strive to be great in their own way, rather than try to follow the path another

person sets.

Another aspect that is important information and vital to a final decision is the

fact of job openings and the security. The accountant looks for a job under a corporation, and

usually when given a job, if performed at an exceptional and peak level, the accountant can

expect to climb the ladder to a higher position each year. The entrepreneur doesn't exactly have a

secure job. The time and energy put in by an entrepreneur usually reflects the success an

entrepreneur faces. The new reality is that working at a job may be the far riskier choice.

Instead, take the high road and go out on your own. (Guillebeau, 2012, page 8) Trust yourself,

as the job might not exactly be secure, an entrepreneur will never have to fire themselves.

The percentage of entrepreneurs who find motivation from working independently.

The graph displays the persistence from citizens in different countries to work a

self-employed career. The need to work under self control can help to motivate someone rather

than having to work for a large corporation. Self employment will help for people to make

decisions that best suit them rather than a corporation controlling their very life.

Conclusion

Entrepreneurs and accounting majors are two people alike. The jobs fit people who work

with the same style, but face different tasks. Through comparing careers, I have decided that the

job of an entrepreneur is more exciting to me, and even with the uncertainty of the job, I show a

lot of passion towards the career. The largest factor for me is the freedom that entrepreneurs have

every day. There is no boss to answer to and no schedule to follow. I also believe that the ability

to increase salary at high rates due to hard work is another key factor. Salary may not be a

guaranteed aspect of being an entrepreneur, but it can increase at any time. The research taken

place during this paper has helped push me towards the path of an entrepreneur, where I will find

myself studying business in college.
