Reflection Essay

I struggle as a writer and as a learner. When I received my first essay back, initially I saw

a 55/100 and then when I did the rewrite I scored a higher grade. I felt like my first essay brought

me down as in it told me I wont pass the class. I did lose some motivation because of the first

initial grade I received. I decided to do the rewrite for the first essay during the last two weeks of

school for Spring 2017. I failed to meet the requirements for the first essay because I did over

summarize two animes that I mentioned. I did the rewrite and I talked about how anime

represents Japan instead of summarizing two animes. In addition, I wrote how Japans culture

expanded in the U.S. This class challenged me like all my other courses. I did struggle here and

there during the spring of 2017 in my English 113B Approaches University Writing course. With

the English 113B course at CSUN, I have improved my writing a little bit and I think I have

learned how to use proper grammar because professor Lawson gave me good feedback on my

essays about fragment error and grammar errors to fix.

I said to myself, damn essays all over again?. I didnt read my essays out loud until I

started feeling the pressure of you better do good or else. I threaten myself and it motivated me

like that. On a side note, it isnt a good idea to threaten yourself because youll feel more

pressure of getting an A than editing your paper. I didnt procrastinate as much as last semesters

English 113A class but I did procrastinate a little bit this semester. When I was writing my 2nd

essay I didnt know what to write about at all. So, I decided watched television shows on Hulu
2

Plus to think about a topic. Mind you it didnt work. I learned this the hard way because I only

had one week left to write about an essay not to think about one. I learned that my writing

process has changed a bit and has stayed the same. What stayed the same are the distraction I had

took away my time. To work efficiently, I had to go to the library at CSUN and at my local

library to do my essays. Something new that I did to write a better essay was do an outline to

organize and construct my essay to make my point clear. My writing process has evolved

through peer editing.

Im a math major and I dont think I will use a lot of writing for my upcoming classes at

CSUN. Although, if thats the case, I will use my writing outside of school because I want to

become a teacher. I will have to apply everything I learned in 113A and B and use it in the real

world. I should master and improve my writing because I will help students with their writing

even if that isnt what I studied. I need to learn how to read better because sometimes I dont get

the authors point. Even word problems eventually get harder. In this class I learned how to read

more articles much more critically because it helps me understand what the author is trying to

say.

I think I made some progress in my writing in this course. There are two assignments that

I need to improve on which is project space and project text. I think I met the basic requirements

but I need to get out of my comfort zone to write a better essay and be more elaborate. For

project space, I will be clearer on what I mean because my sentences a lot more editing. For

project space my sentences and introduction somewhat tell what Im trying to point it on my

essay.
