Eachofthepsychosexualstagesisassociatedwithaparticularconictthatmustbe
resolvedbeforetheindividualcansuccessfullyadvancetothenextstage.The
resolutionofeachoftheseconictsrequirestheexpenditureofsexualenergyand
themoreenergythatisexpendedataparticularstagethemoretheimportant
characteristicsofthatstageremainwiththeindividualashe/shematures
psychologically.
ToexplainthisFreudsuggestedtheanalogyofmilitarytroopsonthemarch.As

fromdefecating.Thechildisnowfullyawarethattheyareapersonintheirown
rightandthattheirwishescanbringthemintoconictwiththedemandsofthe
outsideworld(i.e.theiregohasdeveloped).
Freudbelievedthatthistypeofconicttendstocometoaheadinpoytraining,in
whichadultsimposerestrictionsonwhenandwherethechildcandefecate.The
