understudied.However,theabilitytosolveappliedmathproblemsis
associatedwithacademicachievement,everydayproblemsolving
abilities,andvocationaloutcomes.Thepaucityofresearchonmath
achievementinASDmaybepartlyexplainedbythewidelyheldbeliefthat
mostindividualswithASDaremathematicallygifted,despiteemerging
evidencetothecontrary.Thepurposeofthestudywastwofold:toassess
therelativeproportionsofyouthwithASDwhodemonstrategiftedness
versusdisabilityonappliedmathproblems,andtoexaminewhich
cognitive(i.e.,perceptualreasoning,verbalability,workingmemory)and
clinical(i.e.,testanxiety)characteristicsbestpredictachievementon
appliedmathproblemsinASDrelativetotypicallydevelopingpeers.
TwentysevenhighfunctioningadolescentswithASDand27ageand
FullScaleIQmatchedtypicallydevelopingcontrolswereassessedon
standardizedmeasuresofmathproblemsolving,perceptualreasoning,
verbalability,andtestanxiety.Resultsindicatedthat22%oftheASD
sampleevidencedamathematicslearningdisability,whileonly4%
exhibitedmathematicalgiftedness.Theparsimoniouslinearregression
modelrevealedthatthestrongestpredictorofmathproblemsolvingwas
perceptualreasoning,followedbyverbalabilityandtestanxiety,then
diagnosisofASD.TheseresultsinformourtheoriesofmathabilityinASD
andhighlightpossibletargetsofinterventionforstudentswithASD
strugglingwithmathematics.
