SimBOX Dear Client!

1 Dear Client!
Thank you for purchasing the ROHDE&SCHWARZ TOPEX S.A. product and congratulation for
your wise choice!

Features of SIMBox
The TOPEX SIM BOX equipment belongs to TOPEX SIMSERVER system that provides remote,
dynamic access to SIM cards. SIM cards are stored into SIM BOX equipment.

Features of SIMServer

Virtual allocation of SIMs means very high versatility and avoids expensive and time-consuming
trips for on site SIM card replacement and recharging
Central store & management
The info from all the SIM cards of all the SIM Boxes is stored and managed centrally, on the PC
running the Server application. Later, the relevant info (for a group of modules, valuable for a specified time
interval) may be sent to the respective gateway
Simultaneous remote access to the SIM cards
Flexible SIM allocation, according to tariff plans of the mobile carriers (advanced LCR)
Detailed billing (CDR)
Different algorithms for SIM selection; flexible SIM timer settings (minute, hour, day)
A very flexible allocation: at any given moment of time, any SIM may be assigned to any
GW, no matter where they are in the world
Group based SIM card management the user can define a group of mobile modules
that will be assigned a group of SIM cards (a base). Any client can have one or several
bases of SIM cards.
Remote administration via IP
Real time alarming system the alarms concerning blocked SIMs or other problems can be sent
out via e-mail, SMS or phone. Also, when the user enters the Web based management interface,
he will see warning messages.
Additional local SIM cards can be used for backup. The remote GWs currently use virtual SIMs
from the server, but they are also fitted with real (local) SIM cards. In case of IP link failure, the GW
carries on by using the local SIMs, until the IP connection is restored.
Remote dynamic allocation of SIM cards
Automatic SIM insertion/removal detection the boards with SIM cards are hot swappable, the
program scans the SIM BOX to detect the changes (insertion, removal, replacement of SIMs) and
updates accordingly the data base
Flexible integration into existing mobile Gateways. New mobile cards for the multiAccess gateways
include the SIM emulators. Older cards require an addition/ replacement: the processor replaced
with a piggy-back card. This small PCB includes not only a new processor, but also the required
simulation circuits. Also, it features a pair of SIM adapters (miniature PCBs) that you must inset in
the last two SIM holders, to emulate the local SIM cards.

TOPEX SIM BOX belongs to the TOPEX multi-Access family of equipments and is a part (hardware
part) of TOPEX SIM SERVER system.
The equipments of TOPEX multi-Access family enhanced by TOPEX are:
TOPEX multiAccess gateway and signaling converter of high-capacity (up to 128 mobile networks
subscribers)
QUTEX gateway and signaling converter of small capacity (up to 40 mobile networks subscribers)
SIMSERVER (including SIMBOX) - is the newest concept of TOPEX for connection to mobile
network, that performed a virtual connection between a gateway with a SIM emulator (multiAccess or
QUTEX) and the SIMBOX box with SIM cards

3.1 Principles of SIM Server operation

All of the SIM cards used are virtually stored and operated in a single central SIM server
The SIM server allocates the SIM cards remotely, via an IP connection
The GSM/UMTS modems from the Topex gateways (multiACCESS or QUTEX equipment) have
access to the remote SIM via a GSM terminal adapter/SIM emulation device.

5.2 System cards

5.2.1 Power Supply Card

This system card is a 3U high, double-width one (8 HP wide 40,64 mm)

The switching mode power supply ensures efficiency higher than 77%
when powered from 100 VAC and at least 82% efficiency when powered
from the nominal 230 VAC voltage. It ensures the supply of the cabinet rack
with all required voltages (some of them, such as +12V and 12V are not
used by the Topex cards).
The power supply card must deliver these two voltages:
+3,3V 2% with maximum output current of 36 A
+5V 5% with maximum output current of 25 A
The max. power is 200 W.

The latching injector/ejector handle features a red button. To remove the

power supply card, you must first press this button. This ensures correct
hot-swap operation.

Significance of LED indicators

The supply card features a single optical indicator, which lights up to
indicate correct operation. It is a bicolor LED, and it shows the dual power
supply operation of the chassis if operating in and it current sharing.
When it lights up green, the card is fully functional and it supplies
voltage for the system. When it light up red, the card is working in passive
mode (the system is supplied by the other power supply card).
The 1+1 redundant connection uses two power cards per system.
The SIM BOX may work with one power supply active (one LED red,
the other green) or with both cards active (both LED indicators are lighting
in green). The power card that is not active works in current sharing
mode.

Installation
This card must be installed only on dedicated slots on left 3u slots.

SIMBOX_installation_revC_en.doc Page 13 of 29

5.2.2 Main processor card

The Main processor (CPU) card is a also double-width (40mm) card. It contains a powerful
Intel processor (600/1300 MHz Celeron) controlling the whole PCI bus of the system.
The card includes multiple printed circuit cards and the harddisk for operating system,
application programs and storage. It features on the front panel:
a serial interface (COM1) used for configuring,
a Fast Ethernet connector (100 Base-T),
a combo Keboard/Mouse connector,
an USB 2.0 slot and a digital video (DVI) output
a slot for a memory card type Compact Flash
a DVI connector for digital and analog video output.

These interfaces are used to connect the TOPEX SIM BOX system to a computer or to the
Internet, for installation and servicing or for permanent operation. For instance you can connect
a video display (CRT or LCD screen), a keyboard or/and a mouse so you may perform the
configuration, administration and maintenance operation for the equipment without need for an
additional PC computer or notebook.
Significance of indicators and controls
RESET - Button for reset
HDD - Green LED that indicates activity of the harddisk. In normal operation it should blink,
showing accesses to the harddisk.
WD/GP - Green LED, Watchdog or General Purpose. When lit during boot up, it indicates a
PCI reset is active.
TH/GP - Also green LED, Over temperature Status or General Purpose. If it lights up during
boot up, it indicates a power failure.
Also, the Fast Ethernet connector has two integrated LEDs
ACT
Green LED, shows Ethernet Link/Activity
SPEED

5.2.3 SIM2PCI Boards

The SIM2PCI plug-in board allows simultaneous access to up to 32 SIM

cards (placed in holders on the board).
All subscribers of these SIM cards can be read or written.
The interfacing between the PCI bus of the chassis and the 32 SIM cards
is performed by a FPGA integrated circuit.
The card is fully hot-swappable, being compliant to the standard
CompactPCI Hot Swap (PICMG 2.1 R1.0). The hot-swap status is shown
by the blue LED.

Significance of indicators
DONE (the upper) green LED indicates, when it is alight, that the
FPGA has been successfully programmed upon power-on.
HOT SWAP - (The lower) blue LED indicates the hot-swap state of the
SIM2PCI board.
When you insert the board into the rack, the blue LED turns on, showing
that the board has appeared on the PCI bus. When the lower extractor
handle is fully closed, the blue LED should turn off, indicating the
operating system has acknowledged the new board.

To extract the board, first pull down a single step the lower extractor, until
the blue LED lights up indicating that the board has been un-assigned
from the system. When you see the blue LED is ON, you can pull down
fully the extractor handle, in order to remove the card from the SIM BOX
rack

Installation
These cards must be installed only on dedicated slots 6U slots (the bigger slots)
Attention: when you handle a SIM2PCI board follow the HOT SWAP LED
status.

6.4.1 Accessing LINUX system console
You should access the Linux system console of SIM BOX in order to verify or to view the network
parameters of the SIM BOX, such as IP address, netmask, gateway, IP of the corresponding SIM Server,
etc.
To access LINUX system console, you can either use a serial connection (locally) or a serial
emulator through the Ethernet connection (from anywhere in the world, via IP). The initial IP of each SIM
BOX unit shipped by Topex is written on a label glued to the front panel of the CPU board.
6.4.2 In case of a serial connection
If you use a local serial connection, just plug the cable (RS-232) into the serial connector (COM1
port) of the CPU card of the equipment, while the opposite end is plugged into the COM port of the
computer or terminal used for configuring.

The manufacturer recommends turning off your computer before connecting the serial cable to it. A
proper functioning of TOPEX SIM BOX requires this operation.

You must use a serial communication program (terminal emulator). This may be HyperTerminal"
under Microsoft Windows, Minicom from Linux, TERM 95 under MS-DOS etc.
The communication parameters for the serial link are 115200bps, 8, N, 1:

Baud rate: 115.200 bps

Data bits: 8

Parity: none

Stop bits: 1

Flow control: hardware

Check that the SIM BOX is powered. Once the connection to the SIM BOX gateway is open, press ENTER.
You can see the window like the one below that asks you for the login name and password.

Enter the login parameters:

6.4.3 In case of an Ethernet connection,

You can also use a remote connection via Ethernet to connect to the TOPEX equipment. This is done by ssh
from Linux or using a program that performs ssh under another operating system (for instance Putty for Windows).
[Secure Shell (SSH), also known as Secure Socket Shell, is a command interface and protocol for getting
secure access to a remote computer. To ensure this secure access ssh commands are encrypted and secure in
several ways: both ends of the client/server connection are authenticated using a digital certificate, and passwords are
protected by being encrypted.]
In Linux, you enter the following command to connect to the SIM BOX equipment:
ssh p 2222 admin@< IP address of TOPEX SIM BOX>
The default IP address of the equipment, set from the factory, is the following:
192.168.1.22
When using Putty the connection is done as shown in the window below:

You have logged in as admin, you will be asked for the password:

Otherwise the SSH window is similar to the one shown by Hyperterminal when connecting via serial cable.

SIMBOX_installation_revC_en.doc Page 24 of 29
SimBOX INSTALLING TOPEX SIM BOX

Note: To perform certain operation over the system you must be logged as root, not as admin thus you have to
this permission.
For security reasons, the direct login as root can be performed only from those terminals that are included in the
list of secure (trusted) terminals. From terminals that are not included in this list log-in can be done only indirectly, by
log-in as a non-privileged user and going into root mode with the command su followed by the root password.
On a Linux system, privileged user is the system or network administrator, who has access right above those of an
ordinary, non-privileged user. Direct access to root is available only for privileged users]
Remember that the terminal on COM1 serial port is included in the list of trusted terminals, while the pseudo-
terminals used by ssh are not on this list.

With SSH also you may use the commands shown previously, or use cut to read a configuration file and display it
on the console as shown below:

Also, you may use change_srvup to change the IP and name of the SIM Server:

Remember, for the new parameters to be effective you must restart the SIM BOX using the command
sudo /sbin/reboot.
