L.1.5.a. With guidance and support from adults, demonstrate understanding of figurative

Objectives: Given a cvc word, the student will be able to decode and blend the word with 70%
accuracy.
Given a cvc word, the student will be able to print using proper upper and lowercase letters with
80% accuracy.
Given a cvc word, the student will be able to sort the word into the correct category with 80%
accuracy.

Procedure:
Students will first will go through a Smart Board slide that consists of nonsense words. After the
beldning of the first word being modeled, students will take turns individually reading a
nonsense word. Students will then be asked what a nonsense word is.
The students will then be introduced to the Trash Can game we will be playing. Students will be
told that they will have to read a word, and decide if it is nonsense or real. If it is a nonsense
word, they will get to throw it in the trash can. If it is a real word, they get to keep it. Students
will then be told that as the person reads their word, they will have to decide if it is a nonsense or
real word before the person says it. They will then write it on their paper under the correct
column. After each word, we will go over it and make sure we all have it in the correct column.
To conclude the lesson, students will individually give a word we wrote down, either nonsense or
real.
Groupings: Whole group- we will review reading nonsense words on the Smart Board and
modelling the Trash Can Game.
Individual- during the game, when students are reading their cvc word, and sorting it on their
paper.
Assessment: Formative through observations of which students can accurately blend sounds to
read a word. Their Nonsense or Real Paper will serve as a summative to see which students can
sort words into the correct category.
