Julie Gustwiller Sample Lesson: Penzu

Lesson Plan Title: Our Second Grade Book Club


Lesson Overview: The students will use the Web 2.0 tool Penzu to
create a book report during their first quarter of reading. They will read
their chapter book throughout the first four weeks of reading class. Then,
they will create their own journal entries with the help of Penzu to provide a
summary, character descriptions, setting, and a review of their chosen
book. Last, they will share their journal entries with the class in a
presentation at the end of the nine weeks.

Grade Level: Second Grade

Reading Process A: Establish a purpose for reading and use a range of


reading comprehension strategies to understand literary passages and text

Writing Process G: Publish writing samples for display or sharing with


others, using techniques such as electronic resources and graphics

Writing Applications B: Write responses to literature that demonstrate an


understanding of literary work

Objectives:
1.) The students will create an online journal with the tool Penzu using a
computer with 100% accuracy.
2.) The students will create a total of four journal entries with their Penzu
account providing a summary, character descriptions, setting, and
review of their chosen book.
3.) The students will share their book reports through the tool Penzu with
his/her classmates at the end of the nine weeks using the smart
board.

Materials:
• Computers with Internet access
• Students’ log-in/passwords for Penzu on a note card

• Students chosen book to read


• Smart board
• Worksheet with student directions

Procedure:
1.) Students will choose a chapter book that is suitable for their
reading level and personal interest.
2.) Students will have at least 10 minutes of silent reading time
everyday in class throughout the first four weeks of reading.
3.) Students will go to the computer lab during the fourth week and
create their own Penzu account.
4.) Students will receive a worksheet with the directions for their
Penzu book report which includes: (1) Create at least four
journal entries with one graphic per entry. (2) The first entry
should have a summary with at least 15 sentences including
the beginning, middle, and end of your book. Make sure you
only provide the most important details in your summary. (3)
The second entry should include details about each one of the
characters in the book. Each character should have at least
three sentences about them. (4) The third entry needs five
sentences describing the setting of the book. (5) The last entry
should include 10 sentences telling whether you enjoyed the
book or not, with explaining why.
5.) Students will have at least 30 minutes a week of computer time
to work on their Penzu book report.
6.) Students will present their Penzu book reports to the class
using the smart board during the ninth week of school.

Assessment:
Students will be graded for their online journal and presentation using a
rubric.

2 points- did not meet the required number of sentences and they are
incomplete
4 points- meets the required number of sentences but are not complete
6 points- meets the required number of sentences and half are complete
8 points- meets the required number of sentences and almost all are
