Rationale: This lesson will help advisees define domestic violence and make students
more aware of instances of domestic violence. Students who are being affected by
domestic violence are encouraged to talk to teachers and report what is happening to an
on-campus counselor who can provide a further course of action in order to bring any
student to safety.

Gathering: White Board Activity

Doing this activity will help students be able to define and recognize what domestic
violence is
1. Write the phrase Domestic Violence on the board.
2. Instruct the students to individually write down what they think it means (30
seconds).
3. Ask students to pass up their papers and read some definitions aloud (without
reading the names). Ask students if they agree/disagree, and write a class
definition on the board based upon the responses.
4. Students may only recognize physical or sexual abuse in this definition and thats
ok. You will revisit this definition once the card sort is complete.

Activity: Defining the Words and Card Match Activity

Doing this activity will further the advisees understanding of domestic violence even
further by providing them with examples
1. Hand out the Card Match Activity Page to the students, The Card Match Activity
Key and Defining the terms pages will be used only by the teacher.
2. Use the Defining the terms page to explain the terms to the students.
3. Let them spend about 30 seconds cutting the squares out of the paper.
4. Explain to them that now after reviewing the terms they should use them to fill in
the blank that is in the example.
5. Let the students match the cards for no more than 5 minutes.
6. After the activity is completed use the Card Match Activity Key in order to
review the answers to the fill-in-the-blanks.
Closing:
Students will learn where to go if they are affected by domestic violence or suspect a peer
is affected
Advisor will return to the White board, and with the class, add new words/phrases that
were defined that fit under the term domestic violence. The term domestic violence is
very complex and not easily defined. Advisors should emphasize to the advisees to think
about the examples, the terms and their definitions. Remind them to stay on the lookout
for the warning signs and symptoms of domestic abuse in their peers. Also remind them
that the places they can go are to any on-campus adult. The informative cards that are on
the last page can be printed and handed out to students.
