Mock Exam II

Fall Semester 2015

Physics 2001
1) A small ice cube, of mass 5.00 g, slides down a frictionless ski-jump-like track. Starting from
rest, each cube moves down through a net vertical distance of y = 1.75 m and leaves the bottom
end of the track at an angle of 40.0 above the horizontal (you may assume the net distance to be
the vertical distance between the beginning and the end of the track). At the highest point of its
subsequent trajectory, the cube strikes a vertical wall and rebounds with half the speed it had
upon impact. What average force is exerted on the wall?
2)

3) A mass, 5kg, is connected to a pivot point by a 5m long, massless rod. The mass starts at the
top of the circle and is allowed to swing downwards. If there is another mass, 3 kg, at rest at the
bottom of the circle made by the mass and the rod and the masses interact inelastically, what is
the final velocity of the two blocks?
4) Initially object A has a speed of 5 m/s and object B has a speed of 10 m/s. In the course of
their motion they return to their initial positions. Then A has a speed of 4 m/s and B has a speed
of 7 m/s. What can we conclude about the force acting on the objects? Is there any work done on
A and if so, state how much? Finally, (if you calculated no work done on the objects then leave
this part blank) if object A moves a total distance of 30m on its path back to its starting point,
(assume that the force is friction) then what is the magnitude of friction and the amount of power
caused by friction at the beginning of the motion?
5. Two children are playing a game in which they try to hit a small box on the floor with a
marble fired from a springloaded gun that is mounted on the table. The target is 2.20m
horizontally from the edge of the table. Bobby compresses the spring 1.10cm, but the marble
falls 27.0cm short of the target. How far should Rhoda compress the spring to score a direct hit?

(Hint: Can you find a system of equations for Bobbys attempt at compressing the spring a
distance x, and Rhondas attempt at compressing the spring a distance of, say, x, and then solve
the system of equations simultaneously for the value x?)
6. A 10.0kg block is released from point A. The track is frictionless except for the segment BC,
of length 6.00m. The block travels down the track, hits a spring of force constant k = 2250N/m,
and compresses it 0.300m from its equilibrium position before coming to rest momentarily.

a) Determine the gravitational potential energy at point A.

b) Determine the work done by friction, as a function of k , as the block moves from point B to
point C.

c) Determine the spring potential energy when the spring is fully compressed by the block.

d) Determine the coefficient of kinetic friction between surface BC and block.

7. Two 22.7kg ice sleds are placed a short distance apart, one directly behind the other. A
3.63kg cat, standing on one sled, jumps across to the other and immediately back to the first.
Both jumps are made at a speed on 3.05 m/s relative to the ice. Find the final speeds of the two
sleds. (Hint: Break the problem up into two parts. First, consider the initial jump from the left
to the right sled. Second, consider the final jump from the right to the left sled.)

We will let the x axis point to the right. In the initial picture (not shown) the cat is sitting on the
left sled and both are motionless. The figure shows the cats second jump.
8) A 600 g steel block rotates on a steel table while attached to a 1.20 m-long hollow tube.
Compressed air fed through the tube and ejected from a nozzle on the back of the block exerts a
thrust force of 4.30 N perpendicular to the tube. The maximum tension the tube can withstand
without breaking is 60.0 N.

If the block starts from rest, for how long does the block spin before the tube breaks?
