Reliable and economical operation οΙ the plant iS conditional υροπ its correct operation and mainte- nance ίπ accordance with ΜΑΝ Β&νν Diesel Α/Ξ instructions. Emissions related maintenance οΙ the diesel engine shall be performed as specified ίπ ΜΑΝ Β&W Diesel A/S' instruclions and any additional instruclions 10 that effect included ίπ the Technical File. Consequently, ίΙ is essential that the engine room personnel are ΙυlΙΥ acquainted with the con- tents οΙ this book and, ίπ respect οΙ instructions οπ emissions related maintenance οΙ the diesel engine, also the additional instructions Ιο that effect set ουΙ ίπ the Technical File.

The book is a basic instruction manual ΙΟΓthe particu- lar engine supplied, with plant-adapted information such as basic media-system drawings, electrical wiring diagrams and test bed reports.

The first Ιίvθ seclioπs (500-504) οΙ the book serve as a guide Ιο engine operation, and the ΠθχΙ fifteeπ seclions (505-519) contain technical descriptions, spare parts illustrations with appurtenant parts lists, as well as working cards.

The last section (520) comprises tools.

The engine is divided ίπΙο a number οΙ main com-

ponents/assemblies, each οΙ which is described ίπ

a section οΙ this book (seclion 505-519).

Each οΙ these sections starts with technical de- scriptions οΙ the systems/components, followed by working cards and the spare parts illustration plates and parts lists.

Proper maintenance, which iS the aim ΟΙ this bool<, iS a crucial aspect ΟΙ achieving optimum salety ίπ the engine room. The general measures mentioned here should, therelore, be a natural routine lor the entire engine room staft.

CIeanliness

Spares

General

Large spare parts should, as lar as possible, be placed well slrapped ποαι Ihe area ΟΙ use and should be accessible by crane. The spare parls sl10uld be well- preserved against corrosion and protecled against mechanical damage. Slock Sl10Uld be checl<ed at intervals and replenished in time.

Lίgh!

The engine room should be kept clean above and below the Iloor plates. 1I grit or sand blows ίπΙο the engine room while the ship iS in port, the ventilation should be stopped and ventilating ducts, skylights, and doors ίπ the engine room should be closed.

Ample working lighl should be permanently installed αΙ appropriate places ίη tl,e engine room, and ροιΙ able working light ίπ explosion-prool fittings should be available everywhere.

In particular, welding οι work which causes the spreading ΟΙ grit and chips must be avoided near

Freezing

the engine, unless this iS closed or covered, and the turbocharger air intake filters are covered.

is a risk ΟΙ damage due Ιο Ireezing when the

Order

Hand tools should be placed 10 be easily accessible

οπ 1001 boards. Special tools should be lastened 10 1001 panels (ίl supplied) ίπ the engine room close

ΟΙ use. Νο major objects may be left

unlastened, and Ihe Ilοοι and passages should be kept clear.

ρίΡθ systems should be emptied ΟΙ cooling water.

Warning

Opening ΟΙ cocks may cause discharge ΟΙ hot liquids οι gases. Dismantling ΟΙ parts may cause springs Ιο be released.

The removal ΟΙ luel valves (ΟΓ other valves ίπ the

cylinder head) may cause οίl to

pislon crown, and ίl the piston is hot an explosion may then blow out Ihe valve.

Ιο the

FeeI-over 8eqιlence

Feel over after 5-15 and 30 minutes' idle running and finally when the engine is running at Ιυll load. 8ee also ''Operation'' ίπ the section 501.

Turning

After prolonged out-of-service periods ΟΓ overhaul worl< which may ίπνοlνθ a risk ΟΙ accumulation of liquid ίπ the combustion spaces, turning should always be effected through at least Ιwο complete revolutions.

Remarks Ιο individual Parame!ers

Α. Ρυεl Οϊl Pressure, HFO-operation

When operating οπ HFO, the system pressure must be sufficient to depress any tendency to gasilication ΟΙ the hot luel.

The system pressure has to be adjusted according to the fuel οil preheating temperature.

Β. Nozzle Cooling Οil System

The ΠΟΖΖΙΘ cool;ng 0;1 system is only applied for stationary eng;nes.

Set

As the system pressure ίπ case ΟΙ pump lailure wίll depend οπ the height ΟΙ the expansion tank above the engine, the alarm set po;nt has to be adjusted to 0.4 bar plus the static pressure.

D. Press. ΙΤ -system, ίπlεl engine (ΡΙ 01)

With two-string cooling water system the normal value can be higher, max. 4.0 bar.
