1. How does Emersons essay capture the American values of the romantic era?

- Emersons essay capture the American values of the romantic era by writing about how
people follow or against each other. On his essay, he stated that man should stayed
independent. They must follow their own thought and let the emotion follow their
thought. Moreover, if one person started to be independent other will followed and
against the conformity.
2. How does Emerson view authority, such as the Church or the Government? Use evidence
from the essay to support your answer
- "If you maintain a dead church, contribute to a dead Bible-society, vote with a great
party either for the government or against it, spread your table like base housekeepers,
under all these screens I have difficulty to detect the precise man you are." (Emerson, 5).;
Base on this quote, it prove that Emerson view authority, such as the Church or the
Government as something that shouldnt be follow. He believed that man should had
their own freedom to make their own decision, they shouldnt follow the path that create
by the authority.
3. Are there any similarities between Emerson and Tween? What parallels can be drawn
between Self- Reliance and The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn?
- The similarities between Emerson and Tween are both of them use the language that use
during their time period. Moreover, both The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn and
Emersons essay are realistic. In addition to, both of them show their own thought in their
story; Emersons essay shows how the adult view the society, but The Adventure of
Huckleberry Finn shows how the child view the society.
4. Analyse the following statements.
- He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness,
but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own
mind. Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world (Emerson,
4).
- Base on this statement, Emerson is trying to persuade people to be independent, to
follow their own thoughts, not just the path created by the authority. If they
started to be independent, later they will had freedom, the right to vote, and able
to make their own decision.
- It is easy in the world to live after the worlds opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after
our own (Emerson, 5)
- From the statement, Emerson trying to tell that people will be more comfortable if
they follow what other people does, since they dont have to make any decision
and think about anything, all they need to do is follow the path. On the other
hand, those who lived independent will be isolated, since they did something that
different from other.
- The other terror that scares us from our self- trust is our consistency; a reverence for our
past act or word, because the eyes of others have no other date for computing our orbit
than our past acts, and we are loath to disappoint them. (Emerson, 6).
- From this statement, Emerson trying to tell people not to be scare of being
independent and being as alien since being individuals, we had our own freedom,
our own choice and able to started new thoughts, not just follow other.
