Analysis of Trumps Nominations

Nikki Haley-US Ambassador

Who Exactly is Nikki Haley?

On November 23rd, Donald Trump announced his nominee for the position of the US
Ambassador. He chose Nikki Haley (R), who is in her second term as South Carolinas governor. In
my opinion, this is the coolest position to receive in the federal government. But is Nikki Haley the
right person for the job?
The US Ambassador must protect and promote national interests, organize visits to other
countries, welcome our visitors, support UN resolutions and maintain diplomacy. Theyre supposed to
represent the United States. Nikki, as the 44 year old daughter of two Indian immigrants, does this
well, as America is the nation of immigrants. She was born in a Sikh family, and her first job was at
13, working at her parents clothing store. In fact, this is one of the reasons she is nominated for the
job, because she is different than the typical old white man in high government positions. She has
plenty of experience, being a governor and a previous house representative. According to Forbes, she
was picked by Trump to highlight that he is giving a Cabinet-rank and highly visible post to an
Asian-American woman (Tiefer).
One of the things she has done recently in South Carolina was oppose the Confederate flag on
statehouse grounds. According to CNN, she said, These grounds are a place that everybody should
feel a part of. What I realized now more than ever is people were driving by and felt hurt and pain. No
one should feel pain." Her website says that she has championed transparency and accountability in
state government. She has been known to bridge divides between parties, focus on education
improvements and she has lowered the unemployment rate in South Carolina to a 15 year record low.
I believe she is a surprisingly good choice for the US Ambassador, though people are
concerned because she has no experience in foreign policy. Also, people are curious as to why she
was picked for the job because she did not support Donald Trump in the primaries. Instead, she
backed Marco Rubio. She has called Donald Trump a bully and a fraud. Regardless, she seems like a
good choice for the US Ambassador, who should be a friendly, strong-minded, representative of
Americans and welcoming to the world.
