Innovation
Integration
Engagement
Originality
Why?
Expands current curriculums lesson plans into STEAM
plans for more realistic discovery & innovation for all
types of learners
Diversification of teaching methods - more engaging
student self-directed, project-based, discovery
learning
Faculty rejuvenated by richer living learning
environments to work in
Ho w I t Wo r ks .. .

Using purposeful integration of the exploratory

subjects: fine art, music, PE, technology & engineering
Opportunity to teach collaboratively: exchange ideas
reduce individual work load more productive common
planning times
Subject matter integration/connections - Each subject
helps students learn about the other subjects involved
for deeper understanding
Student team development & room management

where ALL subjects & people are recognized, can

contribute & all effort is encouraged
has curricula that is representative of the surrounding
culture & aware & tolerant of all types of diversity &
perspectives
is adaptable, strong, benchmarked, measurable &
inclusive of the standards & easily reinforces standards in
unique & engaging ways.
promotes deeper understandings and a transference of
knowledge
Philosophy
STEAM = Science & Technology interpreted through
Engineering & the Arts, all based in Mathematical
elements.
Provides an avenue for teaching inter-relationships of
how subjects relate to real life
No need for individual and differentiated lessons
because STEAM is already adaptable and customized for
each teacher and student

Sample Unit:
the science of water, structural materials and buoyancy factors and
geography,
the technology of machines, concepts and skills that allow for the
construction, production, transportation, communication and power and
energy,
the engineering of planning and design with any constructs,
the mathematics needed to comprehend and develop ships at all levels,
the physical, manual, fine and liberal arts used for both large and
intricate elements of ship building including the history and politics and
the language arts to research, convey and report on all of this
knowledge.

U of M
Develop an ongoing partnership with U of
MN to offset training costs
Intense 2 week summer training
Ongoing throughout school year
Two way site visits (U visits us, we visit
them)
Call local businesses to develop
partnerships for further offsetting of costs
Progresses
Primary: Integrative (similar to ship building
unit)
Middle: Students begin to take shape certain
areas that are of particular interest to explore
Secondary: Primary subject focused on
(disciplines) where students can explore
careers they may be interested in

STEAM is STEM, but for everyone

In 2011, all South Korean schools adopted
STEAM curriculum
Functional Literacy - ability to transfer
knowledge with higher order thinking
between disciplines
We now live in a world where:
you cant understand Science without
Technology,
which has most of its research and
development in Engineering,
which you cant create without an
understanding of the Arts and Mathematics.
