The Little Prince: Reading

and Project Packet

As we read The Little Prince, keep the following questions in mind:

What makes this story an allegory? What are the two meanings?
How does the author use symbolism to convey ideas about humanity?
How do the ideas and themes represented here tie into the ideas and themes of
other works weve studied this year (1984, Macbeth, The Catcher in the Rye,
Searching for Sugarman, Frankenstein, charity research or topic of your
commentary)?
How do these ideas relate to your life, society and the values represented between
the two?

At the end of our reading, you will create a project that uses quotes from the novel and
visual images to show a connection to other works weve read over the course of the
year and reflect on your life. As you read, flag, mark and highlight passages that
remind you of the other works weve read and studied. You will create a poster,
prezi, or other type of presentation to show the connections you see.

Each example from the book does the following:

Uses a quote from The Little Prince that is well explained and connected
Uses specific details from the works weve studied and your life to show how the
quote and example from the novel connects to the theme or idea
Drawings, pictures or other visual aids show a clear connection to the ideas
Written piece that explains how the quotes and ideas tie together. Each section
should be at least 75-100 words.

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

1. How does the dedication serve to orient the reader to Saint-Expurys mode of
storytelling?

2. Throughout the novella, but especially in the first seven chapters, both the author and
the Little Prince make a distinction between children and grown-ups; using several
examples, explain the difference between the two. Do you think that Saint-Expurys
point is relevant to our modern world? Provide real-world examples to support your
answer.

3. What is odd or incongruous about the pilots meeting with the Little Prince?

4. Locate several examples of Saint-Expurys use of whimsy and describe their effect on
the story and the reader (not the word whimsy itself, but examples of whimsical,
fanciful or highly playful imagery, language, or ideas).

5. Overall, taken as a group, what did the Little Prince learn from his visits to the
asteroids?

6. Describe the Little Princes relationship with his rose. What complicates their
relationship?

7. Examine the foxs definition of the word tame in chapter XXI; a few pages on, the fox
says, One only understands the things that one tames. How does his definition differ
from how you have always understood this word? If you remember the poem well
enough, relate to the poem Tamer and Hawk.

8. What seems to be the overall mood (atmosphere or feeling) for The Little Prince? Does
it vary in places? Explain.

9. What seems to have been Saint-Expurys purpose in writing The Little Prince?

10. What is the overarching theme of The Little Prince?

11. How do the authors drawing add or detract from the story? Choose one
illustration, describe it, and write a short paragraph responsethoughts, feelings,
connections, evaluations, suppositions, etc.
