The first portion of the eProduct will allow students to click on chemicals and learn
about their properties. They will also get to mix chemicals freely, without worrying
about the hazards associated with them. There will be a chemical bank that will
allow students to drag and drop different chemicals into a beaker. Students will
receive immediate feedback about the reactions that will occur, including
non-reactions.
The second portion will quiz students about what reactions they can expect when
mixing 2 chemicals together. This will be relevant to the type of preparation they
will be expected to do while working as a CSUMB chemistry assistant.
Slide 1: Introduction
Use the same color scheme as the previous
module.
Students will engage in a drag and drop activity. They will be able to drag various chemicals into the
image of a beaker. (designer will find a suitable image of a glass beaker).
Students can drag a maximum of 2 chemicals into the image of the beaker. This is due to chemical
properties and typical usage at CSUMB.
Slide 3 will have feature a start button that will mix the chosen chemicals. Or if designer chooses, this
can be an automatic feature.
Slide 3 will have a quiz button that will jump forward to the graded quiz portion.
Immediate feedback is given. The information will include warnings and the reactions that occurred
between the chemicals (More information will be provided about relevant safety concerns in the
workplace).
Slide ##: Quiz
The quiz will feature the same backdrop as slide 3.
Students will be quizzed on the outcomes various chemical mixtures.
Animation will pause just before the chemicals pour into the same beaker. A pop-up will allow students
to guess what reaction will occur.
Question Bank:
1. Water + Sulfuric acid = Exothermic reaction (very hot). Will lose volume.
2. Water + Hydrochloric acid = Exothermic reaction (hot). Will lose volume.
3. Water + Sodium hydroxide (solid) = Exothermic reaction (very hot). Will lose volume.
4. Potassium (solid metal) + water = violent explosion + fire ignition
5. Sulfuric acid + glucose = Turns black. Resulting in carbon. Solid expands, while releasing gases..
6. Glucose + water = no visible reaction, goes into aqueous solution.
7. Sodium bicarbonate + water = endothermic (cold to the touch) and CO2 gas is formed. Volume
will expand when it reaches room temperature.
Quiz Results
Students will have the opportunity to review their final score.
Students must pass the quiz with a 100% in order to move on to the Certificate
Slide. A Finish Review button will appear and take the students to the final slide.
A retake test button will be included on this slide if the student scores less than
100%.
Final Slide: Certificate of Completion
Students will type their own name into the blank field and print out the certificate of completion.
