1. Scope
TheENERGYSTARfurnaceeligibilityrequirementswilleventuallyreferencetheDOEfurnacefantest
procedure,currentlyunderdevelopment.ThefinalrulefortheDOEtestprocedureisexpectedtobe
publishedinApril2012.PriortothepublicationoftheDOEtestprocedure,theENERGYSTARfurnace
eligibilityrequirementswillreferencethistestapproach.Thistestapproachduplicatesthatstipulatedin
EISA2007.
2. Definitions
AdvancedMainCirculatingFan:AfanusedinafurnacewhichismoreefficientthanastandardFurnace
Fan(definedbelow).ItisahighefficiencyclassofFurnaceFan,whichincludesthosethathavean
annualelectricityuseofnomorethantwopercentofthetotalannualenergyuseofthefurnace.
ANSI/ASHRAEStandard1031993:Theteststandardpublishedin1993bytheAmericanSocietyof
Heating,RefrigeratingandAirConditioningEngineers(ASHRAE),approvedbytheAmericanNational
StandardsInstitute(ANSI)onOctober4,1993,andentitledMethodofTestingforAnnualFuel
UtilizationEfficiencyofResidentialCentralFurnacesandBoilers(witherrataofOctober24,1996).
AnnualFuelUtilizationEfficiency(AFUE):Theratioofannualoutputenergytoannualinputenergy,
whichincludesanynonheatingseasonpilotinputlossand,forgasoroilfiredfurnacesorboilers,does
notincludeelectricenergy.
BurnerOperatingHoursforFurnacesEquippedwithSingleStageControls(BOHss):Thenational
averagenumberofburneroperatinghoursforfurnacesequippedwithsinglestagecontrols.
ControlConfigurations:
SingleStageControl:Acontrolthatcyclesaburnerbetweenthemaximumheatinputrateand
off.
StepModulatingControl:Amodulatingcontrolthatcyclesaburnerbetweenthereducedinputrate
andoffiftheheatingloadislight.Ifahigherheatingloadisencounteredthatcannotbemetwith
thereducedinputrate,thecontrolgoesintoamodulatingmodewhereiteithergraduallyor
incrementallyincreasestheinputratetomeetthehigherheatingload.Atthatpoint,ifalower
heatingloadisencountered,thecontroleithergraduallyorincrementallydecreasestothereduced
inputrate.
TwoStageControl:Amodulatingcontrolthatbothcyclesaburnerbetweenreducedheatinputrate
andoffandbetweenthemaximumheatinputrateandoff.Itmayalsoswitchfromoffto
reducedfiretohighfiretooffundercertainloadconditions.

FurnaceFan:Anelectricallypowereddeviceusedinresidentialcentralheating,ventilation,andair
conditioning(HVAC)systemsforthepurposesofcirculatingairthroughductwork.Afurnacefan
consistsofafanmotoranditscontrols,animpeller,andsheetmetalhousing.
NaturalGasFurnace:Afurnacewithnaturalgasastheenergysource.
OilFurnace:Afurnacewithoilastheenergysource.
OperationModes:
ActiveMode:ThemodeofoperationduringwhichtheFurnaceFanispoweredandtheimpellerisin
motion.AFurnaceFanisinactivemodeduringtheheatingseasoninwhichthefurnaceorboileris
connectedtothepowersource,andtheburner,electricresistanceelements,oranyelectrical
auxiliariessuchasblowersorpumps,areactivated.
Standbymode:ThemodeofoperationduringwhichtheFurnaceFanispoweredandtheimpelleris
notinmotion.AFurnaceFanisinstandbymodeduringtheheatingseasoninwhichthefurnaceor
boilerisconnectedtothepowersource,andtheburner,electricresistanceelements,orany
electricalauxiliariessuchasblowersorpumps,arenotactivated.
Offmode:ThemodeofoperationduringwhichtheFurnaceFanisnotpowered.AFurnaceFanisin
offmodeduringthenonheatingseasoninwhichthefurnaceorboilerisconnectedtothepower
source,andtheburner,electricresistanceelements,andanyelectricalauxiliariessuchasblowersor
pumps,arenotactivated.
PropaneFurnace:Afurnacewithpropaneasanenergysource.
QIN:Fuelenergymaximumnameplateinputrateatsteadystateoperation,includinganypilotlight
input,expressedinBtu/h.
QP:Fuelenergyinputratetopilotlight,expressedinBtu/h.
