Meeting at Mutantville

By: Riley Walker

Visualize a happy life Sitting in your living room with your husband,
playing blocks with your 3 year old son, when he tells you Mommy, it's hard
to breathe! You also notice his nose has started to bleed. Flash forward 6
months, where you are sitting in a hospital room while your son receives
chemotherapy. You cry nightly, but put on a brave face when he's awake.
Now another 6 months have passed and instead of planing a four year olds
birthday party, you are plaining his funeral. You only have to imagine this but
I had to live through it. My 3 year old son George-bailey died 3 days before
his birthday, 2 years ago. He passed away from leukemia, or a cancer in his
blood, which spread fast and affected his whole body. We tried chemotherapy
and other treatments but nothing worked. He fought hard but it wasn't
enough. Now with ESC Lifeworks Inc. company trying to come into town I
looked into Embryonic stem cell research. I've researched how much
embryonic stem cells can do in the medical world, and it's unbelievable. As a
citizen of this town I believe we need this company to save our community. If
Lifeworks Inc. had come into Mutantville 3 years ago, then my baby George
might still be alive. For the future of this town, ESC Lifeworks Inc. would save
our family and friends using embryonic stem cells, just like it could have
saved George.

One of the positives to embryonic stem cell research is that embryonic

stem cells can be used to do more than any other medical option. They can
be used to regenerate organs and repair tissues. Embryonic stem cells have
the potential to differentiate into specialized cell types. Unlike adult stem
cells, which already have jobs in the body, and they can't do as many things
due to this. Embryonic stem cells can do anything because they have not yet
differentiated into their jobs, as well as there being tons of embryonic stem
cells. Overall embryonic stem cells are the leading stem cells, and can do
amazing things. For example, a young woman by the name of Laura
Dominguez was in a car crash in 2001. The crash left Laura paralyzed from
the neck down. But stem cells were placed in the spinal cord. Later on an MRI
revealed her spinal cord had started to heal. Now she is able to do new
things every week. Recognition, a big core value of mine, for these type of
stem cells is a much needed thing. Although there are adult stem cells that
can be used, they technically aren't stem cells because they already have
certain jobs and can only be used to do these certain things. As well as being
extremely hard to extract. We need to recognize, all that embryonic stem
cells can do by bringing in the Lifeworks company to show us.

Another good reason for ESC Lifeworks Inc. to come into Mutantville is
that it will provide medical research. Stem cells are a step in a new direction
to save many lives. It helps to see all that embryonic stem cells can do. Right
now the cell types that have already been developed and/or are currently
being developed are cardiac muscle ( muscle found in the heart), neurons
( nerve cells), Hepatocyte (tissue of the liver), bone marrow ( tissue in the
interior of bones), Islets of Langherhans ( parts of the pancreas that contain
hormone-producing cells), and Endothelium ( cells that line the interior
surface of blood vessels). Think of the millions of other things stem cell
research could lead to. Huge breakthroughs in medicine! This is also
becoming a popular alternative to organ transplants because the wait for the
organs is endless. If this company comes to our town then medical research
will bloom, giving us more insight on embryonic stem cells. This will provide
education, a core value of mine, on embryonic stem cells. I believe the
people in our town are uneducated on embryonic stem cells so it scares
them. But our town could have a better education and understanding of this
type of research if Lifeworks Inc. comes in.

Lastly and most importantly, embryonic stem cells can save lives. It
could have saved my son, George- baileys life. With the advancements in
stem cell research that have already been made we could have saved my
son. Especially when we realized he had developed leukemia. When the
embryonic stem cells get a certain job they could become blood stem cells,
which can be used to treat blood diseases. This has saved thousands of
lives . It ESC Lifeworks Inc. had been in Mutantville then maybe the blood
stem cells could have treated George's leukemia. I strongly believe that we
can change the future of this town by bringing in ESC Lifeworks Inc. With
them here we can save the lives of our friends and family in need of medical
care that embryonic stem cells can provide. It broke my heart when my little
Georgie passed away. My husband and I were devastated over our loss, he
was our first and only child. We loved him so dearly even in the short time
he was on this earth. A strong core value of mine is equality/rights, meaning
everyone deserves the same rights no matter what, and everyone has the
right to live. Especially if that person still has plenty of time left in their life.
Why would you let someone die when you could save their life using
embryonic stem cells. If I could have saved my son I would have. Imagine
your child, your mother, your dad, your husband, you sister, your best friend
in the hospital with a problem that you could solve. You can now solve those
conditions with embryonic stem cells, thanks to ESC Lifeworks Inc. That's
why I believe that bringing in this company would save lives of our town
members and loved ones in the future.

Some might say that using embryos is considered murder, but if you think
about it no one is being killed, in reality these stem cells are saving people.
Think about the millions of embryos that are never fertilized or even born
each year. 40% to 65% of conceptions lead to miscarriages, people get
abortions every day anyway, and in in vitro fertilization only about 30%-40%
of embryos Implant successfully. So if a women is born with 2 million eggs,
and about a max of 8 eggs are fertilized and had, then why not use the other
3/4 s of your eggs to save someone's life. Consider these percentages, if
women have all these eggs then why not use them to save others, if they
can't be used for yourself. Also if abortions are already occuring, then why
can't we stop the stigma of abortions and use the embryos for good. So
although embryonic stem cell research is considered murder to some, it
really isn't because these unviable ( meaning they couldn't live) embryos are
being used to save lives not kill them.

In conclusion if ESC Lifeworks Inc. comes into Mutantville, it will have a

great impact on our town. It could save many lives, provide us as a
community with medical research, and the use of embryonic stem cells is the
best medical choice out there. The future of Mutantville couldn't be brighter
if Lifeworks Inc. joins our little place here. Think about if you could save your
loved ones in the best possible way, would you? I know I would and ESC
Lifeworks can help to do just that.
