4.1 Design for MTR South Island Line East Consultancy Agreement C901 - Admiralty
Station and SCL Enabling Works
Client: MTR Corporation Limited. Contract Sum: HK$2,400 million

The project mainly includes a new extension at the east of the existing Admiralty station to
accommodate an interchange concourse, circulation areas and plant rooms for South Island
Line (East) and Shatin Central Link (North South Line). My responsibilities in this project
are summarized as follows:

4.1.1 Stability Assessment

The new extension of Admiralty station was proposed to be constructed as a Cut-and-cover
Box founding on pad footings on Grade III rock. Lateral soil, water and rock forces were
counter balanced by diaphragm actions. I formulated 2D structural analysis models by in-
house software Oasys-GSA to check the deflection of proposed cut-and-cover box due to
surcharge. Soil and Rock Springs were calculated and applied to the models based on the
geological profile and Geoguide 1. I learned the general process and relevant requirements of
structure stability assessment.

4.1.2 Slab, Beam and Column Analysis and Design

I was responsible for reinforced concrete analysis of slabs, beams and columns for the
proposed Cut-and-cover Box. Load combinations based on Hong Kong Code of Practice for
Structural Use of Concrete 2004 were adopted. I considered loadings from both construction
and permanent phases in the analysis and carried out the design under Ultimate Limit State
and Serviceability Limit State. I gained substantial experience in design of reinforced
concrete structures and appreciated the importance of considering loadings from construction
phase in the structure analysis.

4.1.3 RC Wall Analysis and Design

In-situ RC walls were proposed under the diaphragm walls as retaining structures for Cut-
and-cover Box embedded in rock. To allow for vertical inclination of diaphragm wall during
construction, I assumed thinner sections in analysis and design to ensure adequate structural
strength of the RC walls. I realized that construction sequence and workmanship should be
well considered in order to deliver sound structural designs at the early stage of a project.

4.1.4 Preparation of Tender Drawings

I also prepared markups, coordinated with draughtsman team and checked reinforcement
drawings as part of tender documents.

Please refer to my Project Report for more details of my involvement in this project.

4.2 Supplemental Agreement No. 1 to Agreement No. CE42/2000 (CE) South East
Kowloon Development Stage 2 Infrastructure at North Apron Area of Kai Tak
Airport Design and Construction
Client: Civil Engineering and Development Department, Hong Kong Government.
Contract Sum: HK$268 million

As part of infrastructure works at Kai Tak Development, Stage 2 Infrastructure Works at

north apron mainly consists of a 680m long twin cell box culvert, a sewage pumping station,
road works and utilities. My involvements in this project are illustrated in the following
sections.

4.2.1 Sewage Pumping Station Analysis and Design

I evaluated the feasible structural schemes for the sewage pumping station by comparing their
costs and construction time. Two way span of walls and raft footing were identified as the

better options than conventional vertical cantilever walls and mini-piles by structural analysis
and cost comparison. In the detailed design stage, I established 3D structural model to assist
with the structural analysis. I also learned the importance of adequate cover, concrete mix and
control of crack width in the durability design of water retaining structures.

4.2.2 Twin Cell Box Culvert Analysis and Design

Differential settlement is critical to the proposed twin cell box culvert as the soil conditions
varies along with its layout. I calculated soil springs based on SPT N-values as suggested by
the Ground Investigation Report prepared by in-house geotechnical team. By adopting
software Oasys-GSA, I simulated four sections of the box culvert to check its differential
settlement under various soil spring values and considered both construction case and
permanent case in the analysis and design, and provided movement joints every 12 to 15
meters to cater for its movements. Coordination with geotechnical team expanded my views
to the overall structural design process and increased my knowledge in geotechnical
engineering.

4.2.3 Steel Frame Analysis and Design

A steel frame was proposed by the Architect to be connected to the pumping station as an
open walkway. I simulated this steel frame with Oasys-GSA and considered load
combinations according to the Code of Practice for the Structural Use of Steel 2005,
including thermal load as the frame was subjected to direct sunlight.

4.2.3 Detailed Design of Drainage and Sewerage System

I was also responsible for design of drainage and sewerage system according to Drainage and
Sewerage Impact Assessment Reports prepared in preliminary design stage. This further
expanded my exposure to other design disciplines of civil engineering project.

4.2.4 Preparation of Design Reports, Tender and Contract Documents

In addition to carrying out the detailed structural and drainage design, my involvement also
includes preparation of design reports, particular specifications, and tender/contract drawings.
I also estimated the quantities of excavated soils, backfill, concrete and steel reinforcement to
be required for the preparation of bills of quantities. Through preparing the relevant

documents, I experienced the tendering process and learned the contract documents were the
basis of contract management in construction stage.

4.2.5 Coordination with government departments and utility undertakings.

During the tender stage, I attended meetings with relevant government departments,
including CEDD, DSD, LCSD, etc, and prepared meeting minutes. I also proposed utility
layouts after coordination with relevant utility undertakings, including CLP, Towngas,
PCCW, etc. My communication skills were substantially enhanced by intensive coordination
and preparation of relevant correspondence.

Please refer to my Project Report for more details of my involvement in this project.

4.3 Proposed Tsz Shan Monastery Development at Ting Kok, Tai Po

Client: Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd. Contract Sum: HK$466 million

The proposed monastery is located at mountain area of Ting Kok, Hong Kong. A design team
was established covering various engineering disciplines, including structure, E&M,
geotechnical and civil. I acted as coordinator and designer of civil team for this project.

4.3.1 Preparation of Amendments for Building Departments Approval

My responsibilities in this project were reviewing the overall drainage system based on actual
site conditions, preparing BD amendments and obtaining BDs approvals from time to time.
From this I obtained experience in BD submission and amendment process, and relevant
Building (Construction) Regulations on control of private buildings in Hong Kong.

4.3.2 Coordination with Clients, Architects and Contractor

As the coordinator of civil team, I attended various interface meetings with clients, architects,
structure team, E&M team and the Contractor. With intensive briefings and discussions, I got
a better understanding of the management process of private building projects in Hong Kong,
and gained more confidence in dealing with challenging clients and architects.

5.1 Contract No. KL/2010/03 Kai Tak Development Stage 2 Infrastructure Works at
North Apron Area of Kai Tak Airport for Residential Development and
Government Facilities
Client: Civil Engineering and Development Department, Hong Kong Government.
Contract Sum: HK$268 million

After contract award of Stage 2 Infrastructure works at North Apron Area of Kai Tak
Development, I transferred to the construction site of this contract as Assistant Resident
Engineer. As the only Assistant Resident Engineer in civil discipline on site, I acquired
substantial knowledge, skills and experience in supervision of construction works and
contract management. My main duties are demonstrated as follows:

5.1.1 Review of Material Submissions

Compliance to contract specifications and relevant standards is essential to control the quality
of construction materials. I reviewed the construction materials, including concrete, steel
reinforcement, concrete pipes, etc, and checked their compliance to the requirements as
specified in the Specifications in respect of their components, test results, QA certificates,
relevant job reference, etc.

5.1.2 Review of Temporary Works and Method Statements

According to contract requirements, all the temporary works design and method statements
for the works should be checked and endorsed by Independent Checking Engineer. I
reviewed the endorsed temporary works design with care and checked if there was any
deficiency. For instance, a 16m long strut was proposed as the main strut for the ELS works
of sewage pumping station. However, I checked the temporary design and found the strut
would fail in buckling without the intermediate support. I requested the contractor to
proposed alternative structure system and finally one king post was installed as support for
this main strut.

From reviewing the various temporary works design and method statements, I obtained
extensive knowledge in the structural steel design, construction method of temporary and
permanent structures.

supervision of in-situ test, such as plate loading test, sand replacement test, etc. From the
supervision works, I gained extensive knowledge and experience in quality assurance and
quality control of construction works.

5.1.4 Contract Administration

On a monthly basis, the contractor would submit a Three Month Rolling Programme, which
listed a detailed breakdown and schedule of works to be carried out over the next three
months. I was responsible in reviewing whether the works sequences were logical and
checking the progress of works on site according to this programme.

In addition, I prepared several Variation Orders revising the structure framing of the sewage
pumping station in response to DSDs requirement. Through coordinating with the site
quantity surveyor, I ensured that the changes in quantities of reinforcement and concrete were
measured accurately and that good monitoring of the contract sum could be achieved.
