Q3. 200 cm3/s of a solvent S is used to treat 500 cm3/s of a 15% by weight solution of A in B,
where A is being extracted from B under unsteady-state conditions in a single stage using the
counter-current mode of operation in a liquid-liquid extraction column. The volume of B (VI) is
100 dm3 and the volume, of solvent (V2) is 75 dm3. The distribution coefficient m = 4 and the
densities of A, B, and S are 1200, 1000, and 800 kg/m3, respectively. All the quantities are
expressed on a solute-free basis. (a) Derive an expression for the fraction of A being extracted.
(b) Determine the composition of the final raffinate and fraction extracted after 1 min. (c) If 50%
of A is to be extracted then calculate the time required for same VI and V2. [5 + 3 + 2 = 10]

Q4. Consider an ideal mixture of 20 mol% propane (1), 45 mol% n-butane (2), and 35 mol%
n-pentane (3). If the mixture is tlash vaporized at 82C and 1013.25 kPa, determine proportion of
vapor (V), and compositions of vapor (y,'s) and liquid (x,'s) formed. Use Newton-Raphson
method. [5]

proposed by Barkley and Motard (1972) for decomposition of networks to find the (a) cut-set
containing tear streams, and (b) total number of output streams affected by the cut-set. [10 + 2]
