Life sketch
Ferdinand (Ferd) Kingston was born 16 August 1878,
Launceston, Tasmania, Australia to Quintus Kingston and Mary
Joyce. Ferdinand was the sixth child, and spent his childhood
in the Launceston district of Tasmania with his siblings and his
parents. Ferd never knew his grandfather Elisha Kingston, as
he had died on 23 May 1866, but he did know his grandmother
Sophia Kingston and also James and Mary Joyce.

By 1887, Quintus and Mary Kingston had 10 children born in

Launceston. The first letter of the name of each of their
children follows alphabetical order, Ada, Bertha, Clem, Dave,
Ethel, Ferdinand, Grace, Harold, Irene, and Jesse b 7 August
1887. After the birth of Jesse, Quintus and Mary Kingston
moved to Melbourne, where K for Camillia Kingston was born
in 1890.
The Melbourne address of the Kingston family from 1891-1892 was 144 Coppin St Richmond.
When Quintus first moved to Melbourne he was a butcher, working with John Joyce 1887,
however in 1891 he was a Fruitier, 206 Victoria St East Melbourne. Sophia Kingston appears to
have been living near the family of John Kingston. Sophia died in South Melbourne on 16 March
1902, Father was John Langford, Mother Elizabeth

In 1892 the Quintus Kingston family went by ship to Albany, Western Australia. They settled on a
farm at Seabrook in the Northam area, and their first home was a very temporary dwelling, using
good quality curtains from their Melbourne Home as room partitions. Ferdinand was 14 years,
Grace 12 yrs and Irene would have been 3 years old. In 1898 Bertha Kingston married Albert
Rewell at Northam, and in 1903, Clem Kingston married Emma Egerton Warburton at William
Bridge, Western Australia.

Quintus Kingston died 30 September 1905 after being kicked by a horse. The Electoral roll for
1906 shows David Augustus Kingston and Ferdinand Kingston as farmers at Seabrook Northam,
also Mary Kingston and Grace Amelia Kingston. Mary and the children moved to Perth in 1906

Mary Kingston (nee Joyce) and the children were walking along Beaufort St North Perth when
they heard singing. They were invited in to the meeting, which was an SDA mission. and in the
course of time were baptised in the Swan River at Barrack St Jetty. Mother Mary Kingston, and
the children Grace (26 yrs), Irene (22yrs) and Camilla (16 yrs) joined the Seventh-day Adventist
church. Jesse Kingston, then 19 years old, studied at Avondale College 1906-1907. Grace
Kingston studiied at Avondale College 1907-1909.

It was at SDA meetings that Lillian Prismal met Ferdinand, and they were married in 1909.

In 1910, Irene Kingston married David Dorrington, and in 1916 Camilla Kingston m Cyril Aitken
and were lifelong members of the SDA church. Mary Kingston lived for short times with the
families of each of her married children.

Electoral rolls show Ferdinand Kingstons siblings living at the following locations:
1901-1916 Bertha Kingston and Albert Rewell, a butcher at Narrogin

Ferdinand Kingston got a job as an insurance salesman with the WA, T & G (Temperance &
General Insurance Company) (see photo below), and after marrying Lillian Prismall they lived at
56 Blencowe St West Leederville.

Their first child, Lavinia (Vena), was born on 7 February 1910 at 33 Northwood St West
Leederville., Olive was born 17 June 1911, Hector was born 24 Dec 1913. The children were
brought up attending the Perth (Hay st Subiaco) Seventh-day Adventist Church

Ferd Kingston drove around the countryside organising insurance of people, and he was a
successful insurance salesman, winning a number of awards and commendations from the T & G
Insurance Company. Ferds success as a sales person, enabled the family to have the latest cars
(Chaundler) and a comfortable lifestylle. As the children got to their teenage years, the family
moved to 120 Carr St Leederville. This house had a tennis court that was immaculately
maintained by Ferdinand. Ferd enjoyed music, and the family would sing around the piano,
accompanied by Ferd on his banjo
The children all studied some music, Vena and Olive the Piano, and Hector played the violin,
Ferdinand played the Banjo and clarinet.

In the late 1930s, as the children reached their late teens, Lillian designed the house at 23
Paddingston St North Perth. Lillian was profoundly deaf, but carried an large electric hearing aid
to enhance her hearing. The house was large and modern in its day, with 2 garages and an
attached flat. Another feature of the house was the separate entrance to the music studio, off the
lounge, where Vena could teach piano. Like houses of the day, the kitchen has a terrazo sink,
and an Early Kooka gas stove as well as a wood stove. There was a nearby ice chest for storing
butter. The large radio was in the lounge, which had a bay window and fireplace. In the dining
room was a wind up gramophone. Soiled clothes were tossed down the laundry shute to the
laundry, which was under the back of the house

By the time the house was built, the children were adults, and beginning to move away
from home. Hector went to study Theology at WAMC and later Avondale. Betty went to Sydney
Sanitarium to study nursing and Vena went to India as a music teacher. Vena Olive and
Betty formed a debating team with ANA, and sometimes travelled interstate (Adelaide) to debate.

As for other families, the depression of the 1930s and the Commencement of World War 2 in
1939, caused hardship and some disruption for the Kingston family. Olive Kingston was the first
of the children to marry, marrying on 22 March 1939, Wesley Church Mount Lawley to William
(Bill) Hosken. Subsequently Vena married Paul Mead, Hector married Doralyn Kent, Betty
married Warren Gardner and Allenby, after serving in WW2 married Jean Thorpe.

As the children married, they would bring the grandchildren to 23 Paddington St. North Perth to
visit their Grandparents, Ferd and Lil Kingston. Lillian would love to have the grandchildren recite
or play the piano. She was fond of a large umbrella tree that grew in front of the house.

The photograph below, taken around 1947, shows the children and grandchildren outside the
house at 23 Paddington St. North Perth.

For a number of years Vena, Bevis and Janice Mead lived in the flat at 23 Paddington St North
Perth

Ferdinand Kingston did not appear to be very aware of the

convict family history, however did indicate that ancestors had
been 'policeman' in charge of convicts.

Lillian died on 13 June 1956. Ferdinand subsequently had

several elderly live-in house keepers that looked after him,
including Mrs Lenton. Ferd died 11 December 1962 and was
buried alongside Lillian in the SDA section of at Karrakatta
cemetery in Perth.

About thirty young people enjoyed a delightful evening, interspersed with several interesting games and a
competition, at the home of Mrs. F. E. Kingston recently. Miss L. E, Kingston, L.A.B., A.T.C.L., made a
charming little hostess in a pretty frock of red floral georgette. She was assisted by her mother, who wore a
becoming gown of black ring velvet. Some fine music was enjoyed from those artists who were shortly to
leave for Europe and London, namely, Mr. Cuthbert Matthews (who sailed last week for Italy), Miss B.
Edmunds, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Cummings, and Mr. Norbert Coomer. In a pleasing little speech, Mr.
Kingston voiced the sentiment of all present in wishing those artists every success in their respective
aspirations. Other interesting items were rendered by Mrs. F. Williams, Miss F. Jacobs, L. E. and O.
Kingston, and Messrs. C. Hitcbings, G. McDonald, A. McKenna, and A. Taylor. It was in the small hours of
the morning that all heartily joined in singing "Auld Lang Syne," after which the singing of the National
Anthem -brought a happy farewell evening to a close.

KINGSTON-PRISMALL
A well arranged surprise greeted Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Kingston, of West Perth, when a number of their
friends met at their home at the invitation of the Misses Lavinia, and Olive Kingston, to congratulate
them on the occasion of their silver wedding, a week ago last night.
There was much fun when the bride found herself being led, to the strains of the "Wedding March,"
through an aisle of masked well-wishers showering her with confetti, on the arm of Mr. C. E. Hoare who
had performed the similar duty twenty-five years before. She was again given away to her husband, who
led her to their seats of honor, where their youngest daughter presented her with a beautiful posy of
autumn-tinted rosebuds.
After the identification of the masked guests, music and interesting games and competitions filled several
happy hours, till all adjourned to the dining room, which was prettily decorated with white and silver, to
enjoy a dainty supper.
After the usual toasts, which were musically honored and the cutting of the beautiful wedding cake, the
singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought a memorable happy occasion to a close. Mrs. Kingston was the
recipient of many beautiful presents.

KINGSTON.-On June 13, 1956, Sister Lillian Anne Kingston of 23 Paddington Street, North Perth, W.A.,
passed suddenly to rest at the age of seventy-four years. Her parents, the late Brother and Sister Prismall of
Victoria, were among the first to accept the advent hope in Australia. When the Echo Publishing House at
North Fitzroy was opened, Sister Kingston joined the staff under the leadership of the late Brother D.
Salisbury. After attending Avondale she connected with the Tract Society in the West, where her interest
was always afterward centred. Throughout the years our beloved sister gave of her best and untiringly
served her God. Her passing means the loss of the last charter member of our city church. Her loyal support
to the cause will never be forgotten by those who today are reaping the fruitage of our sister's devotion and
zeal for God. To her loving husband, three daughters, two sons-one, Pastor H. W. Kingston of Victoria, and
all relatives, we tender our sympathy and add, " 'Twill be morning when Jesus comes."
