Feedback on PD and comments on educational technology PD

Sharing experiences and skills with using educational technology:

- Have given workshops on integrating technology into the classrooms since the
1990s.
Sharing how teachers use educational technology:
- Socrative Pro for formative assessment, Flipboard for content curation, Padlet as
a collaborative tool and for lessons, Instagram, Edmodo as a VLE.
- Game apps
Discussing lesson planning based on how our curriculum addresses 21st century skills:
- The college needs a whole college approach to support the acquisition and
implementation of these skills rather than just embedded in the lesson.
Curriculum design of memorization of vocabulary lists and discrete item testing
has a negative backwash and leaning towards lover level thinking on Bloom's
Revised Taxonomy so I push students to do this independently rather than waste
valuable class time on 17th century skills.
- Depends on the course - your question links my planning and these criteria to
the curriculum. I must follow the curriculum. Some curricula lends itself more for
one or another of the criteria. It would be better to indicate which course I am t
talking about and be more specific.
In discussing interest in learning about class websites:
- Yes but I would prefer an accessible collaborative tool such as Edmodo where it is
a tool that does not just deliver materials but is student centers where students
create and add materials. Padlet also is far more collaborative and bottom up
than a website which is a traditional tech tool often very top down" Learner must
be trained in content curation and the creation of materials otherwise technology
is used inconstantly with pedagogy of a learner centered classroom - a maker
style collaborative community. Many tech tools just entrench the "sage on the
stage".
In discussing which educational technologies teachers would be interested in learning
about:

- Software that enables students to post their ideas and share them with the larger
educational world.
- Particularly advanced Excel.
Comments about teachers interest in attending technology-related PD:
- Only where it focuses on pedagogy first too many sessions are just selling
technology in a way that is not research based on its effectiveness to improve
student success. Any teacher training must start with the pedagogy based by
research rather than the presentation of the tool.
- Only if it's something new.
Comments about future ED-Tech workshops:
- I think more teachers should leant about Pallet and the pedagogical advantages
of meeting 21 st century skills and content knowledge. I'm happy to work in a
Meet Up Group. Secondly learning about new technologies should not be in
traditional talk and chalk training sessions but maker " sessions in small groups
led by those up to date with teaching pedagogy. The Professional Learning
Community concept of professional development is far more successful at
teachers implementing changes to their teaching due to ongoing support. Online
collaborative spaces for met ups and chats are the way to assist teachers in real
time as they need support in a positive supportive community.
- ADEC specific software.
