Guidelines for preparing Project Report (4th yr)

1. Order and Contents


a. Title Page
b. Acknowledgement
c. Certificate
d. Abstract
e. Table of Contents, with page numbers
f. List of Tables, with titles and page numbers
g. List of Figures or List of Illustrations, with titles and page numbers.

2. Chapters
(i) Introduction (Overview of the topic with details of the objectives of your project
work outlined)
(ii) Literature Review (what you have studied and previous works done by other
researchers related to the topic)
(iii) Methodology (explain what methods you use when researching and developing
your work, the processes involved, experiments conducted, experiment set up if
applicable, data collection in tabular form,
(iv) Results and Discussions (data analysis, relevance of the result to your objectives,
presentation of comparisons charts, graphs, etc.) (Discussion includes -interpretation
and explanation of your results, Answer of your research questions, justifying your
approach, Critically evaluation your study)
(v) Conclusions and future work (brief summary, conclusions drawn from your
research (essential); importance of your research work; recommendations for future
research; a final paragraph rounding off your dissertation or thesis)
(vi) References (Details given in 10)
(vii) Appendices (Details given in 11)

3. Page Size and Margins


Thesis should be type-written on both sides of good A4 size paper
All pages of the report must have the following uniform margins throughout the document:
a. Left : 2.54 cm + 0.5 cm Gutter
b. Right : 2.54 cm
c. Top : 2.54 cm
d. Bottom : 2.54 cm
e. Exceptions : The title page, abstract, first page of the acknowledgements, first page
of the table of contents, and the first page of each chapter should have a top margin
of 5 cm.

4. Font Type and Size


Use Times New Roman with font size of 12 points for the paragraph text. Superscripts
and subscripts (e.g., formulae, footnote numbers) should be no more than 2 points
smaller than the font size used for the body of the text.
The Maximum size of font used for the Headings should be 14 points.

5. Spacing and Indentation


The text of the report must appear in a single column on each page and 1.5
spacing throughout. Exceptions are blocked quotations, notes, captions,
legends, and long headings, which should be single-spaced with a space between
items.
New paragraphs should be indicated by a consistent tab indentation. There should
be no spacing between paragraphs.

6. Pagination (Numbering Pages)


a. Use lower case Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv, etc.) on all pages preceding the first page
of chapter one (Introduction). The title page counts as page i, but the number does
not appear. Therefore, the first page showing a number will be page ii.
b. Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) start at chapter one (Introduction) and include the
text, illustrations, notes, and any other materials that follow.
c. Do not use page numbers accompanied by letters, hyphens, periods, or parentheses
(e.g. 1., 1-2, -1-, (1), and 1a)
d. Centre align all page numbers at the bottom of the page 1.25 cm from the bottom
edge.

7. Tables and Figures


a. Tables and figures should be placed within the text. Most importantly, the format
chosen for tables and figures must be consistent throughout the document.
b. Each table should be given caption above the table indicating the chapter number
table number and title of the table as given below with boldface and centre aligned
Table 1.1(Title)
c. Each figure should be given caption below the figure with centre alignment
indicating the chapter number, figure number and title of the figure as shown
below

d. The diagrams should be printed on a light/white background.
e. All the graphs should be properly plotted

8. Citations
The reference number should be given inside the square brackets, e.g. [21], following
the referred text.

9. Equations
The equations should be typed using Microsoft Equation 3.0, which can be
accessed through the following steps. The maximum font for equations should be 12
points.
Insert > Object > Microsoft Equation 3.0
Abbreviations and symbols should be defined at their first appearance.

10. References
All the references which are consulted should be listed. Reference should be given in a
style in the text consistent with IEEE format. It should be given after conclusion. The list
should be numbered in Arabic numerals within square brackets. The reference should be
written in the following sequence:
(i) The authors name and initials
(ii) Year of publication
(iii) The title of the paper/book
(iv) Name of the journal/publisher
(v) The number of the volume, page numbers

11. Appendices
They should appear at the end of the document. When there is more than one
appendix, assign each appendix a number or a letter heading (e.g., Appendix 1D,
Appendix One, or Appendix (A) and a descriptive title)
The heading(s) should be centred and appear 2.54 cm below the top of the page.
All headings and titles must appear in the table of contents. All appendix pages should
be numbered with Arabic numerals, continued from and subject to the same guidelines
as the rest of the document.

12. Cover Page


The Cover should have the following printed in block letters:
a. The title at the top
b. Authors name in the middle
c. Name of the Department/Centre and Sharda University, Greater Noida at the
bottom.

13. BINDING: The thesis will be
