Have you reached a fitness or weight plateau? Do you continue to exercise and seem
to get little or no results? Maybe you have reached a plateau. A plateau is only natu- Tuesdays
ral. Consider the body as a stimulus-response mechanism. The stimulus of exercise S.E.T. 8:00 am
creates the response of fitness (increased strength, weight loss, etc.). The body will
respond only so much to the same stimulus. In order to get more response (greater

fitness, weight loss), the stimulus (exercise) needs to be changed or increased. This Strength, Stretch, Balance 10:30am
can be accomplished with some easy steps. Aqua Aerobics 11:15 am

Increase The Intensity Yoga 4:00 pm
In the case of cardiovascular exercise, this means going faster or increasing resis-
tance. Try adding a little more speed or incline while on the treadmill. For the station- Wednesdays
ary bike or the elliptical machine, increase the speed (pedal faster) or increase the ZUMBA 7:15 am
resistance level the machine provides. These tricks will make the body work harder Pilates 8:20 am (ballroom)
and increase the exercise stimulus. Another way to accomplish this is with interval Yoga 8:30 am
training. During one session of aerobic exercise, alternate periods with harder and Interval Blast 9:45 am
easier effort. It can be as structured as even work and rest periods (two minutes
harder effort, two minutes easier effort), or any other combination of work and rest.
Aqua Aerobics 10:00 am
For weight training, this is as simple as increasing the amount of weight lifted. Add Cardio Lite 11:00 am
about five pounds to two or three exercises. Chances are pretty good the same Gentle Fitness 11:45 am
number of sets and repetitions will still be completed. However, more effort will be Chair Yoga 3:00 pm

Pump Up The Volume Thursdays

This is as simple as doing more exercise. Guidelines for aerobic exercise are most S.E.T. 8:00 am
days of the week and 40-60 minutes each time. Add another day, going from five to Step & Stretch 9:15 am
six days of exercise can work wonders for breaking a fitness plateau. Or simply add Strength, Stretch, Balance 10:30am
more time to each exercise session, maybe five or ten minutes, will also increase Aqua Aerobics 11:15 am
total demand on the body. With weight training, add one or two additional exercises
to provide greater results. A preferred method is to increase the exercises done with

the large muscles-legs, back or chest (performing total-body moves). Doing additional Equipment Orientation 3:00 pm
sets on current exercises can also bring additional benefits and challenge to the body. Yoga 4:00 pm

Doing the same exercise eventually yields fewer or no results. Switch from the tread- Yoga 8:00 am
mill to the elliptical trainer, or from a stationary bike to the treadmill. While using the Pilates 8:00 am (ballroom)
same muscles, these will all change how the body works and create more challenge. ZUMBA 9:15 am
Switch weight exercises from machines to dumbbells or vice-versa. Try some body- Aqua Aerobics 10:00 am

shift in how exercise is performed changes the stimulus and thus the response of the Chair Yoga 1:00 pm
body.
Gentle Yoga 2:15 pm
When the exercise no longer seems to provide any benefit, you may be at a fitness
plateau. The body has now adapted to the challenge of exercise. A plateau is eas- Saturdays
ily broken by changing exercise intensity, volume or type. Plus, any exercise, by HIIT 8:15 am
itself, can be modified to provide additional challenge and benefit. Not only can you Interval Blast 9:15am
