TRENDS
Demand for designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) products remained strong in 2016
and registered retail value growth of 21% in current terms with sales touching INR67.8 billion.
Indian consumers are socialising more than ever before and are on the lookout for designer
labels. Women in metro and first- and second-tier cities showed keen interest in designer
ethnic-wear products and were willing to spend on these products during 2016.
The retail value growth of 21% registered by designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear)
products during 2016 was slightly lower than the current value CAGR of 23% registered over
the review period as a whole. The slight drop in growth witnessed in 2016 was mainly related
to the overall macroeconomic situation in the country as opposed to the early part of the
review period.
Womens designer jackets and coats, from a small base, managed to register the fastest
current retail value growth of 27% in 2016 with sales touching INR139 million. Increasingly,
women are socialising more and are joining the workforce which has helped drive sales of
these products.
Mens designer jumpers registered the slowest current retail value growth of 12% in 2016 with
sales touching INR140 million. Mens designer jumpers is still in a niche in India and demand
for these products is yet to pick up.
Womens designer apparel is biggest within designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear)
products in value terms. Womens designer apparel accounted for 43% of all designer apparel
and footwear (ready-to-wear) retail value sales in 2016. This share continued to increase over
the review period from 42% in 2011 to 43% in 2016. Increasingly, women are spending on
designer apparel and show higher interest in designer labels, compared to men.
Designer childrenswear remained in a niche in India during 2016 with limited availability.
Average unit prices of designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) products witnessed
growth of 8% in current terms in 2016.
Designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) continued to have a niche presence within
overall apparel and footwear in India in 2016. The value share of designer apparel and

footwear (ready-to-wear) within overall apparel and footwear at the start of the review period
stood at 1%. This share increased over the review period slightly to stand at 2% in 2016.
However, designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) continues to be in a niche in India
mainly due to pricing.
Store-based retailing continued to be the dominant channel for designer apparel and footwear
(ready-to-wear) value sales during 2016 and accounted for 98%. To check products physically
and ensure that the fitting and look of the products were as per choice, consumers continued
to visit stores and verify the products before purchasing designer apparel and footwear
(ready-to-wear) over the review period.
Internet retailing continued to have a niche value share of overall sales of designer apparel
and footwear (ready-to-wear) products during 2016 and accounted for 2%. The leading online
retailers of designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) in India during 2016 included
Manishmalhotra.in, Manisharora.com, Ampm.com, Taruntahiliani.com, Labelritukumar.com,
Shop.anitadongre.com and Satyapaul.com, among others.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) in India boasts the presence of some of the
best-known international luxury brands such as Burberry, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Gucci,
Calvin Klein Jeans, Herms, Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta and Salvatore Ferragamo, among
others. These brands have a long heritage and international repute, because of which their
popularity is high among Indian luxury buyers.
There is a clear differentiation in terms of pricing among the various designer apparel and
footwear (ready-to-wear) brands in India. Brands which fall under affordable luxury and
aspirational luxury are present across department stores and shopping centres, while
absolute luxury brands are available mainly through company-owned outlets in select luxury
shopping centres in the country. The pricing of the products varies significantly based on the
target consumer groups for which the products are launched.
The younger metro consumers of the country look more towards fashion trends and
international trends when buying designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) goods. The
older generation, on the other hand, lays emphasis on the brand name, brand heritage and
brand origin before making a purchase. For the older generation consumers, luxury goods are
looked at as an investment and, hence, they are cautious about the brand and its heritage.
Designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) brands mainly promote their products through
fashion magazines, luxury events, modelling events and billboards across metro cities.

PROSPECTS
Demand for designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) goods is expected to stay strong
over the forecast period. Designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) is expected to
register retail value growth at a CAGR of 11% in constant 2016 terms with sales expected to
touch INR112.3 billion by 2021.
Expected growth at a CAGR of 16% in current value terms over the forecast period is lower
than the current value CAGR of 23% registered over the review period. The drop in growth
rates over the forecast period will be mainly due to the uncertainty of the Indian economy due
to stringent measures being taken by the government to curb black money and expand the
tax net.

Womens designer jackets and coats, from a small base, is expected to register the fastest
value growth at a CAGR 14% in constant 2016 terms over the forecast period with sales
touching INR269 million by 2021. Increasingly, women in India are socialising more and
demand for womens designer jackets and coats is expected to rise.
Average unit prices of designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) products are expected
to witness growth of 8% over the forecast period.
Designer apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) players are expected to invest in expanding
their presence in India over the forecast period.
Internet retailing is expected to continue to witness strong growth over the forecast period.
Although internet retailing has a niche presence within designer apparel and footwear (ready-
to-wear), it is expected to achieve a retail value share of 3% by 2021.
Store-based retailers are expected to continue to dominate the retailing scenario of designer
apparel and footwear (ready-to-wear) in India over the forecast period. Indian consumers
prefer to visit stores and check the products physically before making a purchase and, hence,
even by 2021, store-based retailing will account for 97% of all retail value sales.
