Recycling Report

Presented by Habalau Bianca

In introduction I would like the present the subject of my report which is about
recycling. And then we will concentrate our attention to Romania, where at the beginning will be
a presentation, then we will discuss about factors that
deal with remedies of recycling. And finally, there will
be presented a short analyze for a company form
Bistrita In the last part we will have some conclusion

Introducti and recommendations for readers about recycling.

on
First of all, recycling is something that we can all do.
Children that are school age and older can help out
too. The goal is to stop tossing out items that we can
use again and again. It costs far less to recycle
materials than it does to create new ones. As the
technology offered improves those methods it becomes
more cost effective and less time consuming for
recycling efforts to be successful too.

If you are taking part in some recycling efforts than

you should applaud yourself for doing what is good for
the environment. If you arent doing it yet dont make
excuses. Dont tell yourself that it isnt that big of a deal, that you dont have time, or that it isnt
worth it.

As stated previously, Romania has one of the lowest recycling rates in the EU. The best recycling
rates in 2010 were found in

-Austria (69.8 percent)

-Germany (61.8 percent),

-Belgium (61.8 percent)

Netherlands (60.7 percent).

To help Romania's recycling system to reach European standards, the authorities have adopted
several annual recycling targets. Under Government Decision no. 621/2005 concerning
packaging management and waste, in 2014 Romania's objective is to recycle 55 percent of total
waste: 60 percent of paper and cardboard, 22.5 percent of plastic, 60 percent of glass, 50 percent
of metal and 15 percent of wood, the same targets as in 2013. Furthermore, under GD no.
1037/2010, Romania has to recycle between 50 and 80 percent of the weight of both electrical
and electronic equipment waste and gas discharge lamp waste collected. Meanwhile, GD no.
1132/2008 stipulates targets of 50-75 percent of batteries and accumulator waste collected. The
country's largest commitment to the European Union remains for 50 percent of domestic waste to
be recycled by 2020.

Europe's main piece of waste legislation, was adopted into national legislation, and
separate waste collection projects appeared at regional level, mainly in cities. From 14
localities and 150,000 inhabitants who had access to the selective collection in 2005-2006,
the system reached at least 45 percent of the population, around 9 million people in over
450 locations, in mid-2013.
Eco-Rom Ambalaje was founded to fulfill the recycling obligations for packaging
waste incumbent on producers that deal with packaged products. Operational since 2004,
when it had 81 companies in its portfolio, in the first half of 2013 this had risen to around
2,600 members.
Recycling and recovery of packaging waste obligations started in 2004 at 15 percent and
increased gradually year on year, reaching 55 percent in 2013: for paper and cardboard, 60
percent; plastic, 22.5 percent; glass, 60 percent; metal, 50 percent; and wood, 15 percent.
While in 2004, around 17,100 tonnes of packaging waste were recycled, by the end of 2012
it had reached almost 400,000 tonnes.

Moreover, in the first half of 2013, Eco-Rom Ambalaje recycled and recovered around
190,200 tonnes of packaging waste, 17 percent more than in the same period of last year.
The figure represented over 70 percent of the amount of packaging brought on the market
by the producer members during that period. However, by the

As used car batteries have a negative impact on the environment, under GD no.
1132/2008, Romania has to recycle between 50 and 75 percent of the batteries and
accumulator waste collected. The largest Romanian manufacturer of car batteries, Rombat
(Bistrita-Nasaud county), recycles more than half of the used batteries on the market,
according to general manager Ioan Repede.

In 2013, the company completed an investment of EUR 17 million in a new production unit
with a capacity of 700,000 batteries, which can produce both batteries for cars with
Start/Stop technology and conventional ones. Due to the new structure, the total production
capacity of Rombat reaches 3.3 million batteries. However, only 40 percent of production
remains on the local market.

are not reflected in the production data. As an overall result, we estimate that more than
20,000 tonnes of used batteries were recycled by our company."

For this year the CEO expects the recycling figures to be at about the same level as
2013 as the new range of batteries will be widely produced from 2015, when the new EU
legislation is enforced. Rombat was founded in 1980. In over 30 years, the Romanian
manufacturer of batteries and accumulators has supplied over 23.2 million batteries for a
wide range of vehicles, machinery and equipment. Since 2012, the firm's shareholder has
been the South African group Metair, with 99.42 percent. Presently, Rombat has 724
employees.
Most of us believe that recycling is ethically the right thing to do. From the comments on the
post, it was evident that sadly, we all seem to have friends, family and acquaintances that do not
recycle. Below are some of the recommendations for everyone to know what important is
recycling :

1. Recycling saves energy.

Recycling saves energy because the manufacturer doesnt have to produce something new from
raw natural resources. By using recycled materials we save on energy
consumption, which keeps production costs down.

2. Recycling reduces landfills.

Recycling reduces the need for more landfills. No one wants to live next to a
landfill.

3. Recycling preserves our resources and protects wildlife.

By recycling, we reduce the need to destroy habitats for animals. Paper recycling alone saves
millions of trees.

4. Recycling is good for the economy.

Recycling and purchasing recycled products creates a greater demand for more recycled goods.
Goods made from recycled materials use less water, creates less pollution and uses less energy.

5. Recycling helps our climate problems.

Recycling produces considerably less carbon, which reduces the amount of unhealthy
greenhouse gas omissions.
