Criteria we use for evaluating
Content
We evaluate the websites on the basis of content in a whole. The content
we evaluated is everything which is visible on the site, this includes
advertising and extra information. The evaluation is not graded on a scale
of points but as an overall experience.

Functionality
Looking at how the website functions and reacts to certain things gives us
an idea of how the designers intended the use. The way you use the
website can be very confusing and rating this aspect of a website gives a
fair representation of initial use. The overall functionality is rated on basis
of personal experience and user-friendliness.

Authority
The aspect of authority is looked at to have an idea of the cultural
background of the founder and designers. Sometimes we look at a little bit
of background of the website and business.

Attractiveness
Looking at the exterior of a website without taking in to consideration
what is explained indicates how people initially look at the website. This
could be interesting for initial findings for designers and the end consumer
on the long term.

Speed
We look at speed to indicate how fast a webpage loads. This is something
which is interesting to compare to active website users. The comparison
between speeds of loading to active users could increase knowledge of
server placement for websites.
1. Fiverr
Website: www.fiverr.com

What?
Fiverr is a website where you can
hire people starting from 4.51$ to do
little or big tasks you cannot or do
not want to do yourself. Basically,
you offer your services and talents.

Content Figure 1 Fiverr (Palmer,

The content is created by all the online contributors who are posting the
offer. Most of the time the offers consist of a title, a description, a picture
or video and a price. This content is totally up to the one who posts the
offer. The themes in which the offers are posted are provided by Fiverr,
which is merely an organizational tool to keep the offers structured.

Functionality
It is a very functional website. On the front page you can immediately
start scrolling or you can narrow down your search by entering key words
in the box on top of the site. When you search for a theme, you get
redirected very quickly and the search results are very relevant.

Authority
Micha Kaufman is the co-founder and chief executive of Fiverr.

Attractiveness
The website of Fiverr has kind of a raw and cool style. There is not much
design or fun in the overall theme. The black and green theme is pretty
basic, but the site looks generally spoken pretty good.

Speed
We tested the speed of Fiverr doing three test runs with another website
called: https://tools.pingdom.com/

The website performs higher than average with a result of 84%.

Figure 2 Fiverr speed test results

2. Wetransfer
Website: www.wetransfer.com

What?
Wetransfer is a website where you can
upload and share big files with your
friends. Big documents often cause
trouble, but Wetransfer can handle
them all. It is also used to share a large
amount of picture with high quality and
resolution. (Megawebsites) Figure 3 Wetransfer (Pflans, 2015)

Content
The content of the website is only the ability to upload and share files. The
biggest amount of content is created by the user, who puts his own
documents on the website, private or public. There is also some general
information available, like there is on almost every website, but this is the
smallest part of the site.

Functionality
The site is very functional. Everything you need is right there where you
expect it to be. You can easily upload and share the files. The waiting time
for those big documents are relatively okay, never longer than 24 hours in
extreme cases.

Authority
Wetransfer is owned by Wetransfer based in Amsterdam and Los Angeles.

Attractiveness
Wetransfer has a very attractive site with its bright blue theme. The
background changes according to the seasons of the year or just random
images and this gives the site a fast-forward and active look.

Speed
We tested the speed of Wetransfer doing three test runs with another
website called: https://tools.pingdom.com/

The website performs way higher than average with a result of 89%.

3 Alertful

Website: http://www.alertful.com/

What?
Alertful is a website which will remind
you of things you need to remember. You describe a certain event, like a
birthday or an appointment, and Alertful will send you a message to
remember this.

Content
The core of the website does not contain a lot of content. Figure
2015)
5 Alertful (Jared,

There is only a cartoon and a grid where you can fill out your personal
information and the event you need to remember. On the bottom of the
site we found some general options which do not belong to the core of the
website, but can be seen as informative or helpful.

Functionality
The website is user-friendly and well-structured. It immediately puts you
on the right page to get started. Filling out the gaps is all you have to do,
so this is quiet easy.

Authority
The company is owned and managed by 4040 Media Limited, which is a
UK-based marketing company.

Attractiveness
Alertful has a very easy and clean lay-out. The cartoon makes the
information very accessible and the blue color gives a vibrant and active
impression. The color-scheme is correctly chosen and the lay-out is very
practical.

Speed
We tested the speed of Alertful doing three test runs with another website
called: https://tools.pingdom.com/
The website performs less than average with a result of being 73% faster
than other tested sites, although the performance rate is 82, which is
average.

Figure 6 Alertful speed test result

4. Trello
Figure 7 Picture of Trello (Groves, 2015)

Website: https://trello.com/

What?
Trello is a tool specialized in
collaboration. It is an easy
overview of who is working on
what, the progress of the work
and what is being worked on. Easy lists and tabs keep the overview clear
and organized. It does not only show what has to be done, but work
progress can be tracked easily. (Maina, 2017)

Content
The content that is on the site, is the content you or other contributors in
your network put on there. There is a section on the site which gives
information about its use, but the rest of the content is totally up to the
user. The general information like a tour, explanations and who created
the site are of course on there as well.

Functionality
The use of the website is very clear, you click on create a board and it
immediately opens the tab to type in. The overload of text on the left and
right site of the board, can be a little overwhelming. When you approach
the program step by step, it is very functional.

Authority
In 2017 Trello is acquired by Atlassian. Before this, Trello has a rich history
of name changes and authority changing facts, which are all stated in a
timeline on their website. (Trello, 2017)

Attractiveness
Trello has an amazing lay out. The combination of blue, white and some
other bright colors create a nice spirit while maintaining a professional
environment. The site gives indications like click to create board, which
sets people to action.

Speed
We tested the speed of Trello doing three test runs with another website
called: https://tools.pingdom.com/. The website performs more than
average with a result of being 90% faster than other tested sites.

Figure 8 Screenshot website speed test Trello

5. Draw.io
Website: http://www.draw.io

What?
This website is used to make flowcharts and
diagrams and distinguishes itself from the
competition with the possibility to
collaborate with other people when having it Figure 9 printscreen pingdom
connected to google drive. Despite the wide
range of functionality the application is totally free with premium versions
adding more accessibility for companies.

Content
The overall content of the application is sourly based on making
flowcharts and diagrams. From the looks of it its clear that there has been
looked at applications within google (such as google chrome) as a
foundation to make the entire application easy to use.

Functionality
The website initially doesnt have a lot of extras making it an overall
enjoyable experience whilst working with it. Its only when you look at the
extra features listed at the top that you get an idea of what the
possibilities are. Nevertheless the functions it has are straightforward and
easy to use.

Authority
David Benson, Original founder of JGraph (similar website) has been hired
and put in charge of draw.io as public figure and Developer. (mertl, 2014)
Attractiveness
Draw.io has a goal to be very user-friendly making for an overall clean but
boring look. The goal regarding looks is to be as least confusing as
possible, being an application with its fair bit of functionality involved
there is no other way than making it plain white.

Speed
We tested the speed of the draw.io doing three test runs with another
website called: https://tools.pingdom.com/

The website performed less than average and this possibly because of the
page size and Java driven application.

Figure 10 printscreen pingdom

6. bubbl.us
Website: http://www.bubbl.us

What?
A simple and free tool which aids you in
making mind maps for free without having to
download complicated software.
Distinguishes itself from the competition by
the high interactive abilities. The website is a Figure 11 printscreen pingdom
freemium with the amount of mindmaps limited to 3 pages.

Content
The content of the website is mainly about the mind mapping with
addition of instructional videos and FAQs. Regular content such as save-
as, print and history of edits are the most notable content integrations

Functionality
Its notable that there has been thought about the functionality whilst
making this application. There are buttons which make the use of the
application easy to understand and maintain. The implementation of the
history of actions is a nice addition on this.

Authority
After reading a book from David Allen about getting things done Levon
(Co-founder) decided that he wanted to make a good brainstorm. Unable
to find good software to do it on the computer he asked a friend of his to
make an application which is bubbl.us today. (Levon, 2015)

Attractiveness
Having the goal of being more user-friendly than attractive they lose a few
points for style but overall the blue color in the top bar is far better than
the blunt colors you can see in Draw.io.

Speed
We tested the speed of the bubbl.us doing three test runs with another
website called: https://tools.pingdom.com/

The website performed well on speed and got a performance grade of

82/100 (B).

Figure 12 printscreen pingdom

7. Get notify
Website: http://www.getnotify.com/

What?
A website promoting a feature which notifies
you when someone has read an e-mail you
send. Being a free user makes you lose out Figure 13 Printscreen pingdom
on some other features like linking the
notifications to your cellphone and e-mail read duration information.

Content
The website itself is quite large with only a small part of the screen taking
up the e-mail registration. The reason for this is because the website itself
is not really used to notify you when your e-mails have been read creating
a lot of space for other things such as feature description and
advertisement.

Functionality
The website on its own is functional because of the spare space used to
give information on how to sign in/sign up. Everything can be found in
seconds which in relation to other websites is a plus.

Authority
Germn Castao being the founder of the website made it because he
thought people ignored his e-mails and wanted to find out. He made it by
adding a domain after the e-mail address to see who connects to it.

Attractiveness
The website being very crowded leaves a chaotic impression because of
this it takes a while till you get an idea of what is relevant and what is not.
Advertisements on the top of the page doesnt help in this aspect. Despite
this the designers made an attractive slide share to inform you of what
the website can provide making it an overall attractive website with its
pitfalls.

Speed
We tested the speed of getnotify doing three test runs with another
website called: https://tools.pingdom.com/
The website performed OK on speed and got a performance grade of
71/100 (C). only performing faster 38% of the time in relations to other
websites tested on the website.

Figure 14 Printscreen pingdom

8. Instuctables
Website: https://www.instructables.com/

What?
Website containing a massive amount of
information on how to do things. The
websites main goal is to attract people to Figure 15 Printscreen of printscreen of
publish their own instructional videos and
texts to help others. They are profitable by people who take classes on
how to do things from others creating income for the teachers as well as
the website.

Content
Instructables is very focused on helping others by creating a very straight
forward website. The content of the website always surrounds the essence
being instructional information for both teachers as students. Some of the
content is premium use only meaning that you have to pay a fee to get
the information.
Functionality
The website in itself is incredibly functional because of the eye catching
way they use their available space. They fill up the entire front page with
an instruction to how you can browse through the website which they
added on by placing interesting topics you can just click.

Authority
Eric J. Wilhelm created the website as he thought there was a niche
market for people who enjoy learning new things. He has built the
company witch today has over 30 employees.

Attractiveness
The website is easy to use for everyone. The instructions on how to use
the website makes the initial contact easy and enjoyable. Adding on this
experience you can see how they developed their website to allow people
to add their own how-to videos reaching another segment of the market.
The colors and images they have used throughout their website are
uniform and very appealing.

Speed
We tested the speed of instructable doing three test runs with another
website called: https://tools.pingdom.com/
The website performed really well on speed and got a performance grade
of 90/100 (A). Performing faster than average 84% of the times.

Figure 16 print screen website pingdom.com

9. Lucyphone
Website: http://www.lucyphone.com
Figure 17 Picture of Lucyphone (Johnson,
2010)

What?
This website gets rid of the issue of wasting
your time while being on hold when you are trying
to reach any service operator. LucyPhone's website is very
straightforward: Just search for the company you want to contact (or enter
their phone number), enter your callback number, and LucyPhone calls
you back when someone picks up on the other line. So no more waiting
time. (Dachis, 2010)

Content
There is not a lot of content on the American website as its core business
and main function is to offer a (free) service, namely virtual queuing. The
only information available is about, our team and the privacy policy.
Furthermore, theres also an option to contact the operators.

Functionality
The website is very user-friendly as it is very easy to make use of their
service. The instruction provided are also quiet clear which makes the
experience of using their service very convenient and satisfying.

Authority
There are three webmasters managing the website and creating the
content that is presented. The brothers Tom Oristian and Mike Oristian,
who are both the creators as well as the developers of the concept. In
addition, Richard Davy the designer has access to making the
adjustments of the website as well.

Attractiveness
LucyPhone has a very clean lay out with a clear call to action. The color
contracts are great as well with a main theme of black, white, grey and a
pink touch. Besides the attractiveness in terms of colors and design, the
usefulness makes LucyPhone more captivating as well.

Speed
We tested the speed of the LucyPhone doing three test runs with another
website called: https://tools.pingdom.com/
The website performs more than average with a result of being 90% faster
than other tested sites.

Figure 18 Screenshot website speed test LucyPhone

10. SCR
Website: scr.im
Figure 19 Picture of Scrim (Pash, 2009)

What?
The next website SCR is also a service
website. The sites prevent spambots
from pickup your e-mail in their
database whenever you fill in your e-mail publicly such as a public forum.
It creates small custom URLs for sharing your e-mail to real people,
protecting you from potential spammers. (Pash, 2009)

Content
As mentioned before, SCR is another website offering a service which
means that their main focus is not on content, but the service. You can
find some information such as FAQ, About, terms & privacy and why you
should use SCR. The info provided is not professionally written, but gives
you the necessary knowledge.

Functionality
The purpose that this site fulfills functions without any problems, meaning
that SCR functions just great.

Authority
As this is a service providing website, the only people that can change or
publish something on the site is Basem Alsallom(the owner) and Ozh
Richard who did the coding and design. An interesting fact is that the
owner is Arabian, but the designer is French which means that the website
is a fusion between cultures containing influences of both folklores.

Attractiveness
The SCR website is not aesthetically whatsoever. It doesnt possess a
professional lay out. In fact, it has a very questionable look which can
cause people to think that it is a shady kind of website that includes
malware. However, a website doesnt have to be attractive. The service
SCR provides works just fine making the lay out of the site less
significant.

Speed
We tested the speed of the SCR doing three test runs with another
website called: https://tools.pingdom.com/
With a load time of only 713 ms, it even scores better than LucyPhone,
however, we do not to take into account that the page size is noticeably
smaller.
Figure 20 Screenshot website speed test SCR
11. Polishmywriting
Website: polishmywriting.com

Figure 21 Screenshot website Polishmywriting

What?
This website is a proofreading tool
that checks your content on
multiple levels. Just simply paste your text into the web page and have it
checked for spelling, grammar, punctuation and style. (Chieftripper, sd)

Content
The basic information can be founded on this service site such as about,
contact, FAQ and information about the developers.

Functionality
The website is very basic and straightforward to use. The main purpose of
the website is proofreading and after using this tool for a few times, I can
conclude that it works great.

Authority
Also on Polishmywriting theres no input on the site from other people
besides that webmasters. It is adapted from a weekly newsroom critique
overseen by Philip B. Corbett, the deputy news editor who is also in
charge of The Times' style manual. The goal is not to chastise, but to point
out recurring problems and suggest solutions. (After the deadline, sd)

Attractiveness
The web design doesnt really meet the design standards, meaning that it
isnt modern or eye catching at all. The visual, interface or even graphic
design is super simple. As a result, I prefer to use the website Grammarly
as it does meet all the latter requirements listed. As they pretty much
provide the same service, my choice of tool is made very quickly.

Speed

12. Mint
Website: https://www.mint.com
Figure 23 Image website Mint (Weliver, 2017)

What?
Mint is a budgeting software used by more
than seven million users making it very easy to
get a handle on your finances. The website
offers free finance software changing they way we handle money.
(Weliver, 2017)

Content
The site is definitely actively maintained and kept up to date. In addition,
the amount of information also meets the needs. Theres plenty of data to
be found, from how it works till support and their blog. Also all the basic
information is present such as contact information, privacy policy, terms
of use, etc. Moreover, there is even a sitemap available for use.

Functionality
I use Mint myself in order to have an overview of my finances and it is
great budgeting software which comes in very handy as a college student
giving me a good overview of my income and expenses. The graphic
designs, the available functions and site navigation certainly meets my
expectations.

Authority
The service is provided by the company Inuit Payment Inc.. Different
from the other majority of the websites on the list, Intuit may allow you to
post content on bulletin boards, blogs and at various other publicly
available locations on the Sites. These forums may be hosted by Intuit or
by one of our third party service providers on Intuits behalf. Some parts of
the Services are supported by sponsored links from advertisers. On the
Mint website, the content published doesnt always directly come from the
webmasters. (Intuit Mint, sd)

Attractiveness
This is one of the most well known and also professional looking
websites on the list. The popularity of the website is very obvious and
they noticeably have put a lot of time and effort in the design and content
presented on Mint. The site is very attractive as well as informative and so
useful.

Speed
We tested the speed of the Mint doing three test runs with another
website called: https://tools.pingdom.com/
Comparing to most of the other website, Mint ranks is one of the slowest.
Notwithstanding that it is still 82% faster than all the websites tested on
tools.pingdom.com and the page size is one of the largest with 2.3 MB.
The tool that Mint provides is also more complex and sophisticated than
most of the websites listed above.
Figure 24 Screenshot Mint website speed test

Conclusion

After carefully analyzing twelve websites from different cultural

backgrounds and making a comparison; we can conclude that the way the
site is presented and organized differs depending on the culture of the
developers.

We, students of International Business Management, should definitely be

aware of the level of cultural influences on the internet and websites in
particular. We should definitely make use of the knowledge obtained after
the analysis and comparison of several websites to adjust the site
depending on the country of the target audience. Cultural awareness
combined with rapid website development is necessary in order to support
the purpose of the website to the fullest.

The speed of a website depends on the page size, the higher the more
time it takes to load. Overall, every site tested scores above average.
Moreover, these results also depend on the country where it is tested
from. The test results will diminish based on the country in which the site
is accessed. An American website will have better results on the speed
test if it is tested from within the USA rather than in Europe. However, the
results do not extremely differ.

A tool that is very useful to decide on the design of your website is

Hofstedes cultural dimensions theory. Depending on these dimensions
such as masculinity vs femininity or other factors such as a country with a
high context culture vs a country with a low context culture, the
website will be drastically different regarding the lay out, design,
pictures, content, etc. They indicate how direct or vague the
communication may be or what kind of pictures you should use to
increase the effectiveness of your site.

Another frequently used tool is the cultural template. The lay-out of the
website stays more or less the same, but there are adjustments according
to cultural demands. Different regions require different approaches. The
adaptations can vary from an extra button, to colors or even orientation of
the website. There is always a minimum of standard information that has
to be visible and accessible on the website. There are so many things that
must be taken into account, because every culture has its own standards
and if a website derives from those standards, it can be rude or not done
for the local customer and you will lose credibility.
