A BSTRACT

ractical training is a method of understanding the implementation

P of theoretical knowledge to practical application. To become a com-

petent engineer it is necessary to have a sound practical knowledge
as it is only way by which one can acquire proficiency and skill to work
successfully in different industries.
Theoretical and applied knowledge are rarely ever concurrent, since
conditions and circumstances in the field are far from ideal.Theory as-
sumes an ideal scenario and is built on that foundation, and can only give
approximations of varying accuracies. These inconsistencies in practical
applications have to be duly considered for any successful operation.
Flowmore Private Ltd. is one of the leading technology driven orga-
nizations in India. Hence, an ideal place to understand the production
processes and systems in a general mass manufacturing unit
This training program was an attempt to study the overall processes
underway at ECEL Assembly plant, to get an understanding of the vari-
ous products that are manufactured and the technology that drives them.
The training was aimed to provide an insight into the general manufac-
turing processes and to realize the selection of these processes for par-
ticular functions. It was a chance to study the technical aspects of these
machines and get a general understanding of the technology, and a look
into the working of the aggregates that form these machines and a chance
to see them in action. The training also aimed to glance into the general
hierarchy of a large organization and an idea of what is expected of an
engineer in the workplace.

F Launched in 1946 with over 50 years of insight and experience, Flowmore has evolved
into one of Indias largest names in this field and has marketing operations worldwide.

1.1 Overview

The origin of Flowmore Ltd. dates to 1946, when it began as a Propriety firm, manufacturing
self-priming pumps. The following decades saw a slow rise of the brand to subsequently become
one of the largest names in India in the market. They incorporated into a Private Ltd. Co.
in 1967, the following years saw a boom of development in India and Flowmore grasped the
opportunity to expand its market, landing big projects like the supply of the Vertical Axial Flow
Raw Water Pumps to Badarpur Thermal Power in 1969 and has become a consistent supplier
for similar and diverse products through the decades. The expansion in the following years led
the company to go public in 2008. Flowmore Ltd., today, is a market leader in the area of large
and special application pumps, having two manufacturing facilities at Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh,
India and 20 regional offices all across the country. Throughout the years, the organization has
maintained its core corporate values and business ethics. Considerable emphasis is given to
safety with Flowmore Ltd. having achieved ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 accreditation

1.2. BUSINESS STRUCTURE

1.2 Business Structure

Flowmore Ltd. is a specialized business operation, offering solutions based on a make to order
design (MTO).The main advantage of the MTO system is being able to fulfill an order with the
exact product specification required by the customer. Every order by a customer is specifically
customized to meet the technical requirements, and also built taking into account the operation
environment, also incorporating additional customer demands into this design. All orders from
the basic level up are made almost from scratch, and the design process only concludes when
complete customer approval is achieved. The result is a very unique product shipping out of the
manufacturing line and into the field, capable of handling strict circumstances and demands
from it.

1.3 Products

Flowmore Ltd. manufactures a variety of customizable products to suit the vast customer
requirements. The pump designs that Flowmore offers are shown below:

3
CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION

Vertical Turbine pumps as shown in Fig.1.1 are special types of centrifugal pumps which use
turbine-like impellers with radially oriented teeth to move fluid. These pumps combine the high
discharge pressures of positive displacement or multi-stage centrifugal pumps with the flexible
operation of centrifugal pumps. Additionally, the flow rate of turbine pumps is not extremely
variable with large changes in pressure like in most centrifugal pumps. They are preferred in
applications where high head, low flow, and compact design are desired, such as in deep-well
pumping. Turbine pumps with a vertical orientation, called vertical turbine pumps, pump media
vertically through the pump body. They are specially designed for pumping water from deep
water sources such as wells, and are mainly used over other types of pumps in applications where
the water surface fluctuates regularly.

1.3.2 Horizontal Split Casing Pumps

Horizontal Split Casing Pump is a type of a centrifugal pump, in which the casing is split into
two separate chambers along a horizontal plane. This type of casing design is more economical
for higher flow applications, and the impeller can be supported by bearings on both sides, an
advantage for larger, higher flow pumps.
The pump has the suction and discharge connections in the lower half of the casing, opposed
to each other. The impeller is mounted on a shaft which is supported by bearings on both sides.
The HSC takes up lesser space compared to other pumps, when taking into consideration the
room needed for repairs and can be checked without removing the rotating element or bothering
the motor or piping.

1.3.3 End Suction Pump

An End Suction Pump is a type of centrifugal pump that has a casing with suction coming in one
end and discharge coming out the top. These are almost always single impeller (single stage)
pumps and are the most common and cost effective industrial level pumps.
The pump usually contains one impeller and a volute type casing. The pumped liquid moves
along the vanes of the impeller, which raises the velocity of the liquid. From there the liquid
moves into the volute casing, where the high velocity is converted to high pressure through a
diffusion process.
