HANDWASHING WITH SOAP(HWWS)

PROJECT IMPLEMENTED BY CACR


(AUG 2016 TO APRIL 2017)
LET’S START WITH A RIDDLE
ANSWER TO THE RIDDLE IS:
AIM AND OBJECTIVES
Aim : Is to inculcate a BEHAVIOURAL (HABIT) change in students for life to wash hands with soap (not
just water) at CRITICAL TIMES and prevent diseases.

 RATIONALE
• Lower-socio economic background : increased susceptibility to diseases
• 3.7 Million: Number of children aged 1 months to 4 years that died in 2013
• Minimal exposure to good hygiene practices at home
• Poor attendance and health in schools
• Habit of washing hands only with water
• Non-availability of soap
DESIGN AND USP (UNIQUE SELLING POINT) OF THE PROJECT

 HWWS is a module in the WASH project


 WASH stands for WATER SANITATION and HYGIENE.
 Change in habits monitored over 12 weeks
 Gradual transformation in students noticed by volunteers, hand wash monitors,
and school staff
 1st Pilot in URBAN Maharashtra
 Had to be scaled up from 5 buildings to 12 due to popular demand
IMPLEMENTATION IN MCGM SCHOOLS
• LOCATONS : Andheri, Parle, Santacruz, Juhu, Khar, Bandra,
Colaba, Khetwadi, Bombay Central, Fort (12 buildings)

• MEDIUMS : English, Hindi, Marathi, Urdu, Guj, Kannada,


Tamil (7 languages)

• SCHOOLS : 38 schools and 1 Rotary Centre


• CLASSES : Grade 1 to Grade 8
• VOLUNTEERS : 150+

• Gilder Lane : Total 279 students in 3 schools
• West Khetwadi : Marathi 54 students in 1 school
• Petit Municipal school: Total 385 students in 4 schools
• TankLane municipal school : Total 363 students in 5 schools
• Hasnabad municipal school: Total 123 students in 4 schools
• Juhu Municipal school : 174 students in 2 schools
• Dixit Road municipal School : Total 579 students in 5 schools
• Powai Rotary Centre : 50 students
• TOTAL : 3234 STUDENTS IN 12 LOCATIONS/BUILDINGS
IMPACT QUALITATIVE
Children started washing their hands after using the toilet and before eating
mid-day meals
Children now demand soap at homes and schools
 Increase in attendance post the HWWS program by 15% in schools
Peer to peer learning on hygienic practices increased
Educating parents and siblings at home about good hygienic practice of
HWWS started
Ownership to the hygiene project and student leadership via appointment of
hand wash monitors in each class

 Different modules for Class 1 to 3; Class 4 to 7 and Class 8

 Follow up sessions with parents and students at the end of the project

• In collaboration with UNICEF India, CACR plans to scale up and implement


modules on WASH
• WATER: Clean and safe drinking water, preventing prevalent water –vector
Bourne diseases (Malaria, Dengue’ fever, chikungunya )
• SANITATION: Cleanliness, Garbage segregation and waste disposal
• HYGIENE: Hand washing with soap (HWWS), Menstrual Hygiene
Management (MHM) (2016-17)
• Locations: All 1100+ MCGM (municipal) schools in Mumbai
