The world comprises of a biome, an environment that is occupied by a

dominant plant. The areas found in a biome are known as a habitat. A habitat is
where species such as biotic components for example plants such as the hibiscus
and animals such as a cat occupies. In an habitat, a community of species
occupy certain positions for example the plants absorb solar energy for
photosynthesis and the animals hunt their prey for food, when this happens it is
known as a microhabitat. The species within a habitat comprises of two
components; abiotic components which are non living thing for example water
depth and sunlight and biotic components which are living things for example
plants and animals, these components are interrelated to each other with a
biological system this known as an ecosystem. There are different types of
ecosystems such as tropical ecosystems for example rainforest and marine
ecosystems for example coral reefs. Tropical ecosystems have high biodiversity
and food web, this focuses mainly on plants. As we know an environment
comprised mainly of water availability,t emperature, salinity and minerals within
an tropical ecosystem water availability and temperature affects the gross
primary productivity of plants. The gross primary production is the rate at which
plants absorb energy from the sun.An ecosystem as we know is based on the
interactions with organism and the environment while biodiversity consist of the
variety of species in a particular habitat. There are mainly three types of
biodiversity these are: genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem
diversity.Genetic diversity is the genetic characteristic of a species that will help
it to adapt to the environment for examples you have two dogs you breed them
and a little puppy appears that puppy will have some of the genetic alleles of
both parents this in turn will return allow the puppy to adapt to the environment.
Species diversity is the variety of species that reside in an environment and the
interrelationship between them and the environment for example you have over
approximately 20 different species living in iwokrama rainforest. Ecosystem
diversity is various types of habitats that you can find on the earth itself for
example rainforest, the desert and the ocean. These level are affected by
overexploitation, this is where plants are cut down or animals are killed at such
a rate that the species would not be able reproduce himself. Overexploitation
can lead to species extinction if not treated fast enough, to help prevent this
from occurring; the convention on international trade in endangered species of
wild flora and fauna (CITIES) was formed. The CITIES was formed to protect
plants and animals from commercial exploitation.
Plant diversity is the total amount of plant species and their habitat. Plants is an
essential to everyday live for example plants take in carbon dioxide and give out
oxygen and without oxygen the majority of the world animal species will die. It
is used for various activities such as; it is involved in the making of medicine
and it is used as food for animals, insects and humans, but like animal species a
plant species can fall in the category of nearly extinct or they were already
extinct. The extinction of plants or the decrease in the plant species population
can be due to pollution, human activity such deforestation, plants may develop a
disease and if left untreated it will spread to other plants, and climate change. To
prevent plant species from becoming extinct a conservation technique known as
ex-situ conservation can be used. Ex-situ conservation is the conservation of
species in botanic gardens such as the Eden project, zoos, protected areas and
reserves.
The Eden project is the home to many plant species from around the world. The
Eden project is found in Cornwall, England, It aims to raise environmental
awareness and to educate society on how much we dependent on plants. Tim
smit an archaeologist in January, 1995 came up with the idea of the Eden
project. Tim smit decided to use a worn out clay pit to build this biome, october,
1996 an architect by the name of firm Nicholas Grimshaw created the design for
the biomes in the Eden project, it was suggested that it should be shaped in the
form of bubbles because they can fit on anything and that there should be
hexagonal panels (625 panels) made from ETFE.ETFE is a thermoplastic that is
recyclable, light and durable, it can also be fixed if torn by using ETFE paste. In
October, 1998 a drainage system was constructed, it allows for the drainage of
water for the watering of plants and plumping since the Eden project will need a
large amount of water each day, therefore rainwater is used. The water is
obtained through a sump; the matting that is placed to capture water filtered the
water that allows the water to runoff into the sump which carries the water to its
desired destination. In March,2000 the Eden project was funded by the
Millennium commission , but it was not until august,2000 they started to make
their own soil, the reason for this is because regions have different types of soil
that makes plants capable of growing there, and then in september,2000 they
started to bring in the plants, some of the plants that were kept in the nursery
was transferred to the biome of which it can grow and most of the plants had to
be imported from countries all over the world, also the seeds for these plants
were obtained by a seed bank. A seed bank is a place in which seeds from every
plant species are stored in case of a plant species is moving towards extinction.
In February, 2001 the Eden project was introduced to the community. In
November, 2010, due to serve raining the Eden project was subjected to the
damage of the plant displays and buildings. The Eden consist mainly of three
different biomes and within these biomes, the climate suits the plants to which
reside there, these are; the humid tropics biome also known as the tropical
biome or rainforest biome, the warm temperate biome also known as the
Mediterranean biome and the roofless biome also known as the outdoor biome.
The humid tropic biome dome is 787 feet long, 180 ft high and measures 360 ft
across at its widest point. This multi domed greenhouse was built to represent
the a tropical rainforest and houses over hundreds of plants from the continent
of south America, Africa, Asia and Australia, such as bamboo, banana trees and
coffee. The warm temperate biome which have a similar dome structure to the
humid tropic biome where the dome is 787 ft long,180 ft high and 360 ft wide,
and even though it houses plants from the tropical rainforest its high volume of
rain each year's allows it to house plants from temperate rainforest found in
southern Africa, the Mediterranean and California, some plants found are olives
and grape vine. The rooftop biome is an open area that has the climate similar to
Chile, the Himalayas, Asia and Australia and it is to which the plants found in
the rooftop biome are from, some of the plants found are lavender, hemp and
sunflower. The biomes are made up of over 30 arc of land.
The hexagonal ETFE panels on the greenhouse allows for the energy from the
sun to heat up the greenhouse floor, this in heat converts the air into hot air and
reflects it to the top of the dome which in turn converts the hot air at the
greenhouse floor into cool air and then returns it back to hot air again, thus this
the air is at equilibrium. The temperature in a greenhouse controlled by the use
of a venting system, this is used to release air when the air in the greenhouse
gets too hot , a heating system is also present in a greenhouse for when there is
not enough sunlight to heat the floors of the greenhouse, and plumbing system
to keep the ground air moist, all of these are ways in climate is controlled within
the biomes. In the Eden project, male butterflies were introduced to prevent
population boom. The Eden project not only assist with the conservation of
plant Species from around the world but it also is set out to provide knowledge
on what is occurring in the plant diversity, all the species the exits around the
world and how important plants are to humans. The Eden Project wants to
attract tourist by entertaining them with their biomes with different plant species
but also wants to maintain its research and education, therefore bring students,
professors and other persons who are interested in the field together to make an
upgrade in science and society.
