e. Diffuse indications due to defective screens or internal faults.
Films shall be always handled by holding it on ends and shall be always kept in a paper
wrapper to avoid artifacts.

6.4 FILM DENSITY

6.4.1 The film density in the area on interest shall be minimum 2.0, Maximum 4 for films performed
with Gamma-Ray, 1.3 minimum as per table T.282.1 of ASME Sec-V for composite viewing of
double film exposure and 4.0 maximum in all cases. Each radiograph of a composite set shall have
a minimum density of 2.0 and the tolerance 0.05 between readings.

6.4.2 If the density of the radiograph any where in the area of interest varies by more than (-) 15% to (+)
30% adjacent to the designated wire of a wire penetrameter within the minimum and maximum
allowable density ranges specified in 6.4.1, then additional penetrameter shall be used for each
exceptional area or areas and the radiograph is retaken.

4.4.3 The Densitometer to be used for assuring compliance with film density. The Densitometer shall be

more than 0.05 density units from actual density stated on the step wedge calibration film.
Periodic calibration check shall be made at the beginning of each shift, after 8 hours of continuous
use or after change of apparatus which ever comes first.

6.5 FILM VIEWING

6.5.1 The equipment used to view films for radiographic interpretation shall provide high intensity light
source sufficient for the specific density range. The viewing conditions shall be such that light
coming from around the outer edge or from low density portions of the radiograph does not
interfere with interpretation.

Viewing shall be done in subdued lighting. Interpreter shall give at least 10 minutes for his eye to
adapt to sub duded light condition. Films shall be handled in such a way that no artifacts like
scratches, finger marks etc. are caused in area of interest.

6.5.2 Film storage: Unexposed films shall be stored in cool dry place in an air-conditioned room. Film
boxes shall be stored on sides. Films shall be consumed on first-in, first-out basis.

7.0 SURFACE CONDITION

The weld crown, if present shall not exceed the maximum permitted values of the referencing
code.

The weld ripples irregularities etc shall be removed by grinding or chipping if they will mask or
produce confusing images that will lead to incorrect interpretation.

8.0 BACKSCATTER CHECK

8.1 Whenever possible there shall be at least 1 meter of distance between film and ground and other
structures that cause back scatter.

Project No.: P14333

8.2 A lead letter "B" with minimum dimensions of in height and 1/16" in thickness shall be
attached to the back of film holder, during each exposure to determine if backscatter radiation is
exposing the film.

8.3 If lead letter appears on the radiograph as a lighter density than background, it is an indication,
shielding against back scatter is insufficient and the radiograph shall be unacceptable. But a dark
'B' image on a lighter background is acceptable.

9.0 INTENSIFYING SCREENS

Lead intensifying screens shall be used in direct contact with the film.

Material - Lead
Front screen - 0.13 mm thickness
Back screen - 0.13 mm thickness

10.1 Location markers appearing on film shall be placed on PART

Location marker can be permanently marked on part or on MAP.

10.2 SINGLE WALL VIEWING

a) Source Side Markers. Location markers shall be placed on the source side when
performing radiography of the following:

(1) flat components or longitudinal joints in cylindrical or conical components;

(2) curved or spherical components whose concave side is toward the source and when the
"source to material" distance is less than the inside radius of the component.
(3) curved or spherical components whose convex side is toward the source.

(b) Film Side Markers

(1) Location markers shall be placed on the film side when performing radiography of either
curved or spherical components whose concave side is toward the source and when the
"source to material" distance is greater than the inside radius.

(2) As an alternative to source side placement in Fig.T-275.1(a) (1), location markers may be
placed on the film side when the radiograph shows coverage beyond the location markers
to the extent demonstrated by Fig. (T-275), sketch (e), and when this alternate is
documented in accordance with T-291 of ASME Sec.V Article 2.

(c) Either side Markers: Location markers may be placed on either the source side or film side
when performing radiography of either curved or spherical components whose concave
side is toward the source and the "source-to-material" distance equals the inside radius of
the component.

the source side surface adjacent to the weld (or on the material in the area of interest) for each
radiograph.

11.0 SENSITIVITY

Radiographic sensitivity achieved shall be 2% or better wherever practical. Only Wire type
penetrameter shall be used to check sensitivity.

Sensitivity shall be calculated by dividing the diameter of the thinnest wire visible on the
radiograph by material thickness (inclusive of weld reinforcement both sides) under the wire and is
expressed when using wire type image quality indicators.

11.1 SELECTION OF PENETRAMETER (I.Q.I)

Selection of IQI shall be as per ASME Sec V Table T-276.

Penetrameter is based on single nominal wall + estimated weld reinforcement.

Backing ring or strips shall not be considered as part of thickness on which penetrameter is based.

11.2 PLACEMENT OF PENETRAMETER

11.2.1 Source side penetrameter - The penetrameter (s) shall be placed on the source side of the part
being examined, except for the condition described as below:
When configuration or size prevents placing the penetrameter(s) on the part or weld, the
penetrameter (s) may be placed on a separate block. Separate blocks shall be made on the same or
radiographically similar materials and may be used to facilitate penetrameter positioning. There is
no restriction on the separate block thickness, provided the penetrameter/area of interest density
tolerance requirements is met.

1) The penetrameter on the source side of the separate block shall be placed no closer to the film
than the source side of the part being radiographed.

2) The separate block shall be placed as close as possible to the part being radiographed.

3) The block dimensions shall exceed the penetrameter dimensions such that the penetrameter
image shall be visible on the radiograph.

11.2.2 Film Side Penetrameter (s): Where inaccessibility prevents hand placing the penetrameter (s) on
the source side, the penetrameter(s) shall be placed on the film side in contact with the part being
examined. A lead letter "F" shall be placed adjacent to or on the penetrameter(s) but shall not mask
the essential wires.

11.3 NUMBER OF PENETRAMETERS

11.3.1 When one or more film holders are used for an exposure, at least one IQI shall
appear on each radiograph to be interpreted.

11.3.2 If more than two penetrameters are used because of density requirements, one shall
be placed in the lightest area of interest and the other in the darkest area of interest.
The intervening densities on the radiograph shall be considered as having acceptable
density.

geometry of exposure shall be such that the thickness penetrated by peripheral beam of radiation
shall not be more than 1.1 times the thickness penetrated by the axis of the radiation beam.

Material thick, in. (mm) Ug Maximum in. (mm)

Under 2 (50) 0.020 (0.51)
2 through 3 (50-75) 0.030 (0.76)
Over 3 through 4 (75-100) 0.040 (1.02)
Greater than 4 (100) 0.070 (1.78)

Ug is given by formula
Ug = F x d
------
D

Ug = geometric unsharpness

F = source size the maximum projected dimension of the

effective focal spot in the plane perpendicular to the distance D form the weld or object
being radiographed.
d = distance from source side of weld or object being
radiographed to the film
D = distance from source of radiation to weld or object
being radiographed.

12.2 RADIOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUE

A single wall exposure technique shall be used for radiography whenever practical.
When it is not practical to use a single wall technique, a double wall technique shall
be used. (See Table 4 for Technique and Exposure Requirements)

12.2.1 Single Wall Exposure - Single Wall Viewing (SWE/SWV) Technique - the
radiation passes through only one wall of the weld (material), which is viewed on
the radiograph for acceptance. (Figure 1)
12.2.2 Double Wall Exposure - Single Wall Viewing (DWE/SWV) Technique-
Radiation passes through two walls and only the weld (material) on the film
side wall is viewed for acceptance on the radiograph. For full weld coverage
of circumferential welds at least 3 exposures taken 120 apart shall be taken.
(Figure 2)
12.2.3 Double Wall Exposure - Double Wall Viewing (DWE/DWV) Technique -
radiation passes through two walls and both walls are viewed for acceptance
on the radiograph. These techniques shall only be used for materials and
welds in piping 3.5 inch NPS or less. (Figure 2)
12.2.4 Only a source side penetrameter shall be used for the double wall viewing
technique.
12.2.5 For the elliptical DWE/DWV technique the radiation beam shall be offset
from the plane of the weld at an angle sufficient to separate the images of the
source side and film side portions of the weld so that there is no overlap of
the areas to be interpreted. The elliptical technique requires at least 2
exposures 90 to each other for each weld to be radiographed to achieve
complete coverage.
12.2.6 In the superimposed DWE/DWV technique, the source shall be at right
angles to the weld and the image of both walls is superimposed. The
superimposed technique, as a minimum, requires three (3) exposures taken
either 60 or 120 to each other for each weld to be radiographed to achieve
complete coverage.

Table 2-2 Acceptance Criteria for Table 2-1
Symbol Measure Acceptable Value Limits (Note 6)
A Extent of imperfection Zero (no evident imperfection)
B Depth of incomplete penetration 0.8 mm (1/32 in.) and 0.2Tw
Cumulative length of incomplete penetration 38 mm (1.5 in.) in any 150 mm (6 in.) weld length
C Depth of lack of fusion and incomplete penetration 0.2Tw
Cumulative length of lack of fusion and 38 mm (1.5 in.) in any 150 mm (6 in.) weld length
incomplete penetration [Note (7)]
D Size and distribution of internal porosity See BPV Code, Section VIII, Division 1, Appendix 4
E Size and distribution of internal porosity For Tw 6.4 mm ( in.), limit is same as D
For Tw > 6.4 mm ( in.), limit is 1.5 X D
F Slag inclusion or elongated indication
Individual length Tw/3
Individual width 2.4 mm (3/32 in.) and Tw/3
Cumulative length Tw in any 12Tw weld length
G Slag inclusion or elongated indication
Individual length 2Tw
Individual width 3.2 mm (1/8 in.) and Tw/2
Cumulative length 4Tw in any 150 mm (6 in.) weld length
H Depth of undercut 0.8 mm (1/32 in.) and Tw/4
I Depth of undercut 1.6 mm (1/16 in.) and Tw/4 or 0.8 mm (1/32 in.)
J Surface roughness < 500 min. Ra per ASME B46.1
K Depth of root surface concavity Total joint thickness, incl. weld reinf., Tw
L Height of reinforcement or internal protrusion For Tw mm (in.) Height, mm (in.)
[Note (8)] in any plane through the weld shall be 6.4 () 1.6 (1/16)
within limits of the applicable height value in the > 6.4 (), 12.7 () 3.2 (1/8)
tabulation at right. Weld metal shall merge > 12.7 (), 25.4 (1) 4.0 (5/32)
smoothly into the component surfaces. > 25.4 (1) 4.8 (3/16)
M Height of reinforcement or internal protrusion Limit is 2L
[Note (8)] as describe in L
** Tungsten Inclusions To be evaluated as rounded indications. Elongated or
aligned tungsten inclusions are unacceptable.

Tw = Nominal wall thickness of the thinner of two components joined by a butt weld.
Notes:
(1) Criteria given are for required examination. More stringent criteria may be specified in
the engineering design. See also paragraphs. 341.5 and 341.5.3 of ASME/ANSI B31.3

(2) Longitudinal groove weld includes straight and spiral seam. Criteria are not intended to
apply to welds made in accordance with a standard listed in Table A-I or Table 326.1 of
ASME B31.1.

(3) Fillet weld includes socket and seal welds, and attachment for slip-on flanges and branch
reinforcement.

(4) Branch connection weld includes pressure containing welds in branches and fabricated
laps.

(5) These imperfections are evaluated only for welds 5 mm (3/16 in.) in nominal thickness.

(6) Where two limiting values are separated by "and", the lesser of the values determines
acceptance. Where two sets of values are separated by "or", the larger value is acceptable.

(7) Tightly butted unfused root faces are unacceptable.

(8) For groove welds, height is the lesser of the measurements made from the surfaces of the
adjacent components. For fillet welds, height is measured from the theoretical throat, Fig.
328.5.2A, of ASME/ANSI B31.3 internal protrusion does not apply.
