Heneral Luna Reaction Paper

Heneral Luna is the breath of fresh air the Philippine mainstream cinema needs. I
can go as far and say it has everything any Filipino would enjoy superb action
sequences with just the right amount of humor to keep you tethered to the screen.
War is not to be taken lightly and moreso the killing of a fellowmen amidst the
former. This film isnt afraid to tackle these sensitive issues. Heneral Luna did for
the Philippine-American War what Life is Beautiful did for the Holocaust. But what I
enjoyed the most is their portrayal of the oftentimes unlikeable Antonio Luna and
with the breathtaking interpretation of John Arcilla, I can honestly say this film will
not be forgotten for years to come. If youre a movie buff, such as myself, who
analyzes the technical aspect of filmmaking, I say this frankly: as far as war films
go, I cannot consider this on par with the greats (Apocalypse Now, Schindlers List,
etc.). What I found lacking is emotional impact. Dont get me wrong, I love the
Philippines and her eventful history under several supercountries, but Heneral
Luna just didnt move me as much as I expected it to, due to all the hype
surrounding this film. I just have to mention Lunas reminiscing sequence, from
Christmas in his childhood to his fencing duel with his brother. The shots were so
artistic and kudos to the cinematographer!
