1. Calculate the usual test constants from following results of a steel tensile test:

Dia of specimen = 2 cm
Distance between gauge points = 16 cm
Load at yield point = 700 kg
Maximum load during test = 1200 kg
Gauge length (after fracture) = 19.2 cm
Diameter at fracture = 1.42 cm

road skidded for a total of 60 meters after the brakes were applied. If the co-efficient of friction
between the tyres and the pavement is 0.5, what was the probable speed of the car just before the breaks

19. A heavy spherical ball of weight W rests in a V-shaped trough whose sides are inclined at and

placed on the side of inclination and it is made to rest on the first ball. Work out the force exerted by

20. State and prove Varignons theorem

21. A rigid bar AB with rollers of weight P = 250 N and Q = 500 N at its end is supported inside a
irular ring in a vertical plane as shown in Fig. The radius of the ring and the length AB are such that
the radii AC and BC form a right angle triangle at C; that is, + = 90o. Ignore friction and weight of
the bar AB, find the configuration of equilibrium as defined by the angle ( - )/2 that AB makes with
the horizontal. Find also the reactions RA and RB and the compressive force in the bar AB.

22. A wheel of radius r = 0.3 m and weight 2000 N rests against a rigid rectangular block of 0.15 m

the corner of the block. Assume all surfaces are smooth. Find the reaction of the block.

23. A machinegun fires 180 bullets per minute. Each bullet has a mass of 50 g and the muzzle
velocity of the bullet is 600 m/s. Presuming the firing to be continuous, make calculations for
the average reaction of the gun against the support.

24. A 150 kg scooterist is travelling with a speed of 36 km/hr on a road that makes an angle of
30 with another road upon which a 60 kg cyclist is travelling at 8 km/hr. When they approach
the crossing, they collide and move as one mass. Determine the final velocity, both in
magnitude and direction.

25. A block of mass 50 kg mass is released from rest and slides down a 30 inclined plane as
shown in Fig. After sliding 1.5 m down the plane, the hits a spring of spring constant 25
N/mm. If the coefficient of friction between the block and plane is 0.2, make calculations for
the maximum deformation of the spring and maximum velocity of the block. Also find the
distance the block will move up the plane due to rebound.

horizontal floor and the corner B against a smooth vertical wall as shown in Fig. Show that the least
