This article talks about Henry Fairs photographs. His photographs of industrial

places have been provoking admiration and concern.

About 15 years ago, when was on a cross-country flight, he looked out the

window and saw several cooling towers that look amazing and he just got a plane.

Hes known how a photographer of environmental degradation; a lot of his

photos have been talking in an airplane at about 1000 feet. Fair has taken pictures of

oil refineries in Texas, paper mills in Ontario, the oil-slicked Gulf of Mexico etcetera.

A lot of his work appears in The Day After Tomorrow.

Fair consults specialists to better understand his photos. He has to look for good

images in order to create eco-consciousness in people.

He doesnt want to identify the polluters, but he wants to help people to think

about the costs of our choices: my toilet paper comes from what? Is that the way to

get aluminum?

His first camera was a Kodak Retina. His first subjects were people he would

see on the streets and old machinery. He graduated in media studies in 1983. Then,

he has worked construction jobs. In 1990s, machinery, industry and pollution got his

attention.

Hes living trying to help the environment. He use less electricity and try to travel

by train. He said people are thinking that Im crazy, but then they think about it a little

bit. Thats the point.

I think Fairs work is very important for humanity, because its a good way to get

people attention in order to raise public awareness about the damage we are making

to our world.

Its a big damage. Our industry is making bad thinks and to be honest Its the

first time that I see the real size of our actions.

I think industries are intervening in the natural course of our environment. We are

destroying our world.

Im not environmentalist, but I think we must to do something. In my case, I try to

recycle electronic devices and use less electricity, and sometimes I recycle paper too.

We can do important things if we want. The point is our attitude.
