Disciplining
Fasting is not simply restraining the body from the tongue in
Ramadan
food, drink and its desires, neither is it to
deprive us of some of our comfort and
conveniences, but rather an opportunity to
attain Piety. The Glorious Quran states:
Fasting is prescribed for you as it was
prescribed to those before you, so that you
may attain Piety.

Ramadan comes to us with a whole host of

opportunities to correct and connect ourselves
to our Lord. A month with a great opportunity The month of Ramadan is the month of spiritual and
to polish our character both internally and physical training. A month in which the body is cleansed
externally; so the one who observes this both physically and spiritually through self-control and
blessed month could reach the zenith of self-discipline. Just as we restrain our body from food and
righteousness and piety. Indeed this is the real drink and its desires, we must also restrain and discipline
purpose of Ramadan. our tongue from its inappropriate use.

From amongst the numerous benets of fasting, one of the

key benets that are derived in this month is the fantastic
opportunity to restrain our tongue from backbiting,
slandering and swearing. Whilst fasting, if one fails to
restrain the tongue from vile speech such as backbiting,
swearing and slandering then the fast will become void. The
beloved Messenger (pbuh) said, Whoever does not refrain
from indecent speech and immoral actions, Allah is not in
need for him to refrain from food and drink. (Bukhari)

Allah the Almighty has given us our tongue as a huge

blessing and a very important component with a very
signicant purpose. He states in the Glorious Quran, And
speak to others with kindness. This verse tells us that one
of the key function of the tongue is to use it as a tool to
spread kindness and love. A very soft part of the human
body, if used appropriately it will increase ones scale of
good deeds and earn them the pleasure of Allah. On the
contrary, if it is used inappropriately it will destroy ones
good deeds and earn them nothing but the displeasure of
Allah.

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim stated, Verily, a slave of Allah will

come on the Day of Judgement with good deeds equivalent
to mountains. However, he will nd that all his good deeds
have been destroyed due to the misuse of his tongue. Just
reect upon this statement for a moment. How easily do we

RESHMA BEGUM Teacher

A month of multiple blessings and rewards,

Muslims all over the world eagerly welcome the
blessed month of Ramadan with hope and
determination. Striving to seek salvation from the
hellre on the Day of Judgement, they engage in
avenues of sincere fasting, increased Ibaadaah
(worship) and Dhikr (remembrance), reciting the

Quran and a determination to increase ones
performance of good deeds during this auspicious
month.
and more

PRODUCTIVE
The month also sees a substantial amount of
focus laid upon the meal times which encase the
day of fasting, in the form of the Suhoor
(pre-dawn meal) and the Iftar (sunset meal).

"He who provides a fasting person something

with which to break his fast will earn the same
reward as the one observing the fast, without
diminishing in any way the reward of the latter"
RAMADAN
(At-Tirmidhi).

The importance of the meals is irrefutable.

However Ramadan is not a food festival and
eorts should be prioritised towards fullling
ones spiritual stomach rather than the physical
one. As such, here are a few tips to help induce a
more productive and healthier month of Ramadan
InshaAllah:

1 It is very common for people to overspend and buy needlessly
when browsing through supermarkets, particularly when
hungry. By making up a meal plan for your family before going
Make up a weekly meal shopping, you can coordinate your shopping list accordingly
and thus restrict yourself from buying things that are not

being tempted by these extra frivolous items.

2
It can be very easy to think that after a long day of fasting your
family would need an even bigger portion than usual, but this
Portion control is not the case. With Iftar being much later, bigger portions can
induce greater feelings of lethargy and gastric problems. Stick
to appropriate portions, still keeping some space so not to
exceed satiety and to avoid waste. Our Prophet (pbuh) said
"No Human ever lled a vessel worse than the stomach.
Sucient for any son of Adam are some morsels to keep his
back straight. But if it must be, then one third for his food, one
third for his drink and one third for his breath" (At-Tirmidhi).

3
By doing this, the temptation to overindulge to immediately
compensate your hunger is minimised. Once the fast is broken
with dates and water, we should rst aim to pray Maghrib and

Suhoor heats up the rice perfectly again, as if it has been
freshly made.

The blessings of the month of Ramadan only come for us once a year. As a result, it is our duty and obligation as
Muslims to try and ensure that we are able to utilise this blessed month and reap the spiritual rewards that are on oer.
No doubt, with growing days and more demanding work schedules, it can be very easy to get carried away with the
physical aspects that may occur. However, our life in this world is only momentary whereas our deeds have eternal
consequences. Therefore we should try to endeavour to engage our inner willpower not only for the month of fasting,
but also beyond.
