Paragraph: Process analysis

How do you find the right shoes for running and walkingthe shoes that help you
move better and keep from hurting your feet, legs, and back? Use these five steps: (1)
Find the right sizeshoes that are long enough and wide enough in the heel and toe.
(2) Get a strong but light outer sole and top. (3) Be sure there is a good midsole
between the outer and inner soles.(4) Check that there is a very soft inner sole to go
around your foot. (5) Be sure that the shoes bend when your feet bend.

2. Paragraph: Classification

We can see different types of vines (climbing plants) as we look around us. Look for
these classes: Root climbing plants are those that grow roots to hold to flat surfaces
and to get into small openings. Poison ivy is a root climber we see everywhere.
Twining plants are climbers whose tips grow in circles. They wrap their stems around
trees, other plants, or anything else that gets in the way. Look at some clematis.
Tendril plants are plants that climb because their stems grow when they touch
something hard. They wrap themselves around this hard surface. Look at the way
kudzu climbs.

3. Paragraph: Example (illustration)

Governments job is to do those things that must be done to make our lives easier and
safer. The following things are examples of what we mean. Government arranges for
the education we need to learn how to do our jobs and to carry (out the other parts of
our lives. Government arranges for fire departments, police, and other services to keep
us safe and sound. Government arranges for electricity, water, gas, garbage collection,
and other services we need to run our lives. Government gets the money to pay for the
things we need by collecting taxes from us, the people who are served.

4. Paragraph: General analysis

The United States is such a large mass of land that it is hard to understand. We can
break it into areas (parts) to help us grasp it better. The East starts at the Atlantic
Ocean and goes west through the Appalachian Mountains. The West starts at the
Pacific Ocean and goes east through the Rocky Mountains. The Plains are from the
western slope of the Appalachian Mountains to the Eastern slope of the Rocky
Mountains.

5. Paragraph: Cause-effect analysis

What causes us to think and feel the way we do? We think and feel the way we do
because of what we have learned through such sources as the family, the school, and
the media. One, we get many of our ideas from our families. Most often, we think the
way our parents think. For example, we need to think carefully and to consider other
peoples ideas. Two, we are taught many ideas at school. We find out about the many
things that people in our country believe. For example, All men are created equal.
Three, we pick up many ideas from the TV, radio, and movies. They bring us the news

1
and they show us ways of thinking about things. For example, the media bring us
many ideas about how to get along with others.

6. Paragraph: Definition
Lightning is a dangerous problemso dangerous that we need to understand it better.
Therefore, lets define lightning. Lightning is the movement of electricity from one
part of a cloud to another. This movement of electricity, occurs when three things take
place: Negative charges build up in one area; positive charges build up in another; an
electrical current moves between the positive and negative charges. With this
movement of electricity, we see a large flash of light called lightning and hear a loud
noise called thunder. In some places, lightning happens most often in the spring and
summer when there are large cloudsrarely in the winter when there are no large
clouds. However, there are exceptions like California where lightning happens very
often in the winter.

7. Paragraph: Description

There is a hidden line in our nations capital. Washington, D.C. The line is easy to see
once we point it out to you and tell you what it is like.
The line starts on Capitol Hill, a hill in the middle of Washington. D.C.
Three buildings sit on this hill. One is the Capitol, the building where the
Congress sits. Another is the Supreme Court Building, where the Supreme
Court Justices sit. Another is the Library of Congress, which is our national
library of record; that is, it has copies of everything published in the United
States.
The line runs west from Capitol Hill.
First, the line goes through the Mall. The Mall is the place where most of our national
museums are.
Second, the line goes through the Washington Monument. This monument helps us
remember George Washington, our great Revolutionary War leader and our first
president. The White House is just north of the Washington Monument. The president
lives and works in the White House. The Jefferson Memorial is just south of the
Washington Monument. This memorial helps us remember Thomas Jefferson, the
author of our Declaration of Independence and our second president.
Third, the line runs through the Reflecting Pool and the Lincoln Memorial. The
Lincoln Memorial helps us remember Abraham Lincoln, our great Civil War
president. The Lincoln Memorial also is where Martin Luther King, Jr., made his
famous I Have a Dream speech.
Fourth, the line goes west and stops at the Lee-Custis house and Arlington National
Cemetery. Robert E. Lee was a great Civil War general. Arlington National Cemetery
is our national cemetery for members of the armed forces and others who have served
the nation.
This hidden line, then, joins some of the most important places in our national life.

8. Paragraph: Comparison-Contrast

Most people have a problem keeping straight on Michelangelo and Leonardotwo

of the greatest artists of all time. Lets see how they are alike and how they are
different. First, lets look at some similarities.
Michelangelo Buonarroti and Leonardo Da Vinci were both Italian artists.
They worked at about the same timethe late fifteenth and the early sixteenth
centuries.
Both were very great painters. Michelangelo painted The Creation of Man on the
ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. Leonardo painted The Last Supper.
Second, lets look at some differences between the two artists.
Michelangelo was also a great sculptor. He wanted to spend his time doing such
statues as the David. On the other hand, Leonardo was also a great scientist. He
wanted to spend his time studying such things as manned flight. (His studies along
with many other things led to the airplane.)
Leonardo did most of his writing in his Notebooksmany books telling about his
scientific studies. On the other hand, Michelangelo turned to poetry. He wrote
sonnets.

9. Paragraph: Narration

In the mid-1800s, Dr. Alexander Melville Bell developed a system of visible speech.
This system was very helpful in teaching speech to deaf people, among others. Later,
his son, Alexander Graham Bell, started to teach this visible speech system and other
communication methods to the deaf. A. G. Bell did not like his deaf pupils to use sign
language and finger spelling because these methods kept them from communicating
easily with hearing people. Instead, he wanted them to use speech and speech reading
along with any hearing they had left (residual hearing). About 1875, to help deaf
people use their residual hearing better, he worked to invent ways for making sounds
loud enough to hear and ways to carry those louder sounds to the deaf person. The
telephone was one invention that came out of Bells work. The rest is history.

10. Paragraph: Argument (opinion)

School uniforms should be mandatory for all students for a number of reasons. First,
they make everyone equal. In this way, the rich kids are on the same level as the
poor ones. In addition, getting ready for school can be much faster and easier. Many
kids waste time choosing what to wear to school, and they are often unhappy with
their final choices. Most important, some studies show that school uniform make
students perform better. Their national exam results are better than those who are not
wearing the school uniform. Many people might say that uniforms take away from
personal freedom, but I believe the benefits are stronger than the drawbacks.
