CPN Background

CPN
CPNs include scenarios such as office intranets, enterprise campus, public area coverage, as well as residential premises.
As CPNs are evolving from the traditional telephony networks toward Internets and the Internet of Things, service
requirements are also diversifying from the unitary telephony service into multimedia applications. The high-bandwidth,
wide-coverage, and multi-service all-optical access has become the mainstream choice for building CPNs. ..

Higher bandwidth, smooth evolution: Bandwidth-intensive services require networks to support large-capacity access and
continuous smooth evolution.
All scenarios, more services: Scenarios encompass offices and surveillance, as well as voice services and the Internet of Things.
Services are diversifying.
Protecting investment, reusing resources: The new networks should fully reuse the existing lines and auxiliary resources on
the campus, thereby protecting the customers' investment.

Campus access network scenarios can be divided into office network, public facility network, and home network. Office networks
use FTTO-type ONUs to carry voice, broadband Internet access, video conferencing, and private line services. Public facility networks
use indoor and outdoor ONUs to provide access control, surveillance, and Wi-Fi services. Typical home networks are those that use
ONTs to carry triple play services.

Solution Highlights
No.1 Flexible network
Multiple services carried over one PON network, network decoupled from services; service quality ensured through traffic
classification and HQoS.
Flexible capacity expansion; heterogenous network that supports PON, 10G PON, and 40G PON on the same platform.

No.2 Ubiquitous access

Unified multi-service access, including broadband, wireless, and telephony services, broadcast television, video surveillance, and
distant meeting.
Unified multi-scenario access, meeting indoor and outdoor network requirements through a rich series of OLTs, ODN devices,
and ONUs.

No.3 Green and economical

P2MP passive networks drastically save optical fibers and support a 20 km distance.
New copper line technologies such as vectoring and G.fast deliver a bandwidth over 300 Mbit/s, and drive down cable
investment by reusing the copper line resources.

Smart Grids Background

Smart Grids
A smart grid is built on integrated high-speed bidirectional communications networks. A series of technologies are
employed, such as the advanced sensor and measurement technologies, control methods, as well as decision-making
support systems, so as to build a reliable, secure, economical, efficient, environment-friendly, and safe grid. As a
critical part of a smart grid, automated power distribution is currently the key point of smart grid construction.

High reliability: The SCADA system requires the network to be protected with comprehensive backup mechanisms and
excellent quick recovery resilience.
Tight security: Communications terminals, when deployed outdoors, must be able to resist viruses and malicious attacks.
Environmental adaptiveness: Outdoor operating environments are harsh, so the devices must support excellent anti-
interference and EMC performance, and must be able to run steadily in harsh environments.
Maintainability and manageability: The grid involves a large number of nodes that are widely distributed. The monitoring
system must be capable of remote monitoring, and quick problem locating and handling.

Bidirectional network optimization: Multiservice operating requires the B&T
networks to provide higher bandwidth.
3-network convergence: The networks must be able to provide home users with
services including Internet access, video, and interactive video ordering. Batch pre-
deployment must be supported to meet requirements for network device quick
deployment, hierarchical NMS, and IPDR fine-grained operating.
Compatibility with existing networks: The new networks must be compatible
with the existing B&T DOCSIS OSS and cable modems (CMs). Existing cables must
be reused, so that coaxial cables need not be deployed, saving optimization costs.

B&T Network Optimization Solution Overview

Based on the new requirements of the B&T bidirectional network optimization, Huawei proposes the innovative D-CMTS solution,
which downsizes CMTS devices, and deploys the devices in residential communities or buildings, delivering 1000 Mbit/s to
the building and 100 Mbit/s to the user. The CMTS device carries integrated services, including data, voice, and video services,
implementing the all-scenario solution for MSOs.

The D-CMTS solution moves the physical-layer and data link-layer interfaces from the branch equipment room down to the optical
site. The optical node connects downstream to the HFC network through RF interfaces, and connects upstream to the OLT through
PON ports. Such a network mode can deliver 1000 Mbit/s to the building and 100 Mbit/s to the user, supports traditional services
such as home access, and supports new services such as enterprise L2VPN access and hotspot coverage. It is an all-scenario solution
for MSOs.

Solution Highlights
No.1 Compatible with existing networks
Compatible with the existing OSS and service provisioning modes; compatible with the existing DOCSIS 2.0/3.0 terminals
(including CMs and STBs).

No.2 CMCs moved lower down the network

CMC deployed on optical nodes, each CMTS device covering 256 users, offering 800 Mbit/s downstream and 160 Mbit/s
upstream.

No.3 Multi-service access

Optical fibers are deployed close to users, providing integrated access capabilities, and supporting multiple services, including
traditional services and new services such as enterprise VPN and hotspot coverage.

No.4 Saving resources

The solution adopts a P2MP network architecture. Multiple optical nodes share the same feeder fiber, saving fiber resources by
80%. The QAM is deployed at lower layer of the network, saving aggregation ports of the central equipment room.
