from it by radiation of wavelength 1200. Ans: 6.2eV

Q3. A certain metal has a threshold wavelength of 600 nm. Find the stopping potentials when the
metal is irradiated with, (i) monochromatic light of wavelength 400nm. (ii) light having twice the
frequency and three times the intensity of that in (i). Ans: (i) 1.03 volts (ii) 4.14 volts.

Q4. The energy required to remove an electron from sodium is 2.3 eV. Does sodium show photo-

What is its new wavelength. Ans: 0.1024nm

Q7. In a Compton scattering experiment, a photon of frequency is scattered by an electron which is

at rest initially. What is the maximum possible kinetic energy of the recoil electron ?

Q8. A proton is accelerated from rest by a potential of 100 volts. What is its de Broglie wavelength ?
Ans: 0.028

Q9. The kinetic energy of an atom in an ideal gas at absolute temp T is of the order of 3/2 kT. Calculate
the de Broglie wavelength of an atom of mass 6.7 x 10-27 kg in the gas of temperature 270C.
Ans: 0.72

Q10. An electron is moving with kinetic energy of 400 keV. Find out its phase velocity and group
velocity ( rest mass energy of electron mc2 = 511 keV). Ans: vg=0.808c and vp=0.61c

Q11. An electron is confined in a one-dimensional potential box of width 0.1 nm. What is the
minimum kinetic energy of electron ? Ans: 0.96eV

Q12. An electron in an atom is excited to next higher energy state. The electron stays in that excited
state for 10-8 seconds and then goes to its previous state; in this process, the excess energy is emitted
in the form of a photon. Find the inherent uncertainty in the frequency of the photon.
Ans: 8x106 Hz
