Summary of Event

This past Tuesday, while accepting the nomination for her partys
candidate, Chancellor Angela Merkel, made it known to her party
members, that they should ban full-face veils wherever it was legally
possible. She stated that there would be no toleration of the Shariah Law
over the German Justice system.

When welcoming nearly one million asylum seekers last year, Merkel
surfaced with a powerful message of tolerance, that however, did not stop
the fear and anxiety that some people felt towards these refugees,
because of terrorism, which caused a lot of Anti-Immigrant parties to
advance. Because of this, Merkel tried to balance things out; during her
80-minute speech, she used this time to express how freedom and equal
treatment is important, and even criticized the United States
President-Elect, Donald Trump, however she also reinforced her position
on the veil ban and said that Germany should be more cautious of who
they let into their country.

The biggest applause that she received was her promising that the
Shariah Law would never replace the German Justice. The loudest cheers
came from one line in particular, Here we say, Show your face, Ms.
Merkel told the party. So full veiling is not appropriate here. It should be
prohibited wherever legally possible to further reinforce her stance on this
issue.

Opinion on Event

In my opinion, I dont think the government or their justice system, should really
have any say on the way people want to practice their religion. If citizens dont
criticize people from other religions like Christians and/or Catholics who choose
to dress up as nuns, then I dont really see why women who choose to wear
Niqbs are an exception?

Relate to Historical Event

In a way, this could relate back to when the Nazis rose to power back in the
1930s. No, they are not out there killing people or sending them to concentration
camps because of their religious beliefs, however they are giving people
something to fear. The Nazis made the Germans fear the Jews back then just
like wanting to ban the full-face veils can lead to people thinking that anyone who
wears them are terrorists.

Relate to Theme

This event would most likely fit under the Political Structures category, since this
does have to do with quite a big issue over there. Id say it probably fall under the
Nations and Nationalism category, because in a way this is Germanys way of
not really being so tolerant of other peoples religious practices.

Questions

About how much of the German population are against

immigrants?

If some women want to wear full-face veils, then why would she
make it illegal?

How can she claim to believe in freedom, when she plans to

take away someone's freedom to practice their religion?

Are there any other solutions to this issue?
