TYWLS Course Outline for Students and Families 2016- 2017


Course Name: PreCalculus Prerequisite: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2
Department: Mathematics Teacher: Mr. Hargrove
*All courses assess student performance based on the TYWLS School-Wide Grading Policy for grades 6-12.

Course Description:
PreCalculus is a course designed to lay the foundations needed for more advanced courses in
mathematics including college-level classes in Calculus. The topics that will be covered will range to
include topics in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 with an emphasis placed on increasing the rigor of
the topics covered. The following topics will be covered this year:

- Functions and their graphs - Polynomial and Rational Functions


- Exponential and Logarithmic Functions - Trigonometry
- Analytical Trigonometry - Systems of Equations and Inequalities
- Matrices and Determinants - Sequences and Series
- Probability - Limits and an Introduction to Calculus
- Analytic Geometry

Textbook: PreCalculus with Limits
Larson and Hostetler
2nd Edition

Additional resources and regents prep work will be added as the year continues including material for
students who wish to move ahead and for those who need extra help with a particular topic. Students
will be expected to collaborate on various assignments.

Project-based Learning Opportunities:


During each unit, we will have check-up assessments, quizzes, and a unit test and/or a unit project that
will summarize the skills learned. Meaningful projects for students to demonstrate mastery of a topic
will be made available for students throughout the year.

Students will be given an opportunity in January to improve Algebra 2 Regents grades.
