during the sequencing of insulin.

A Letter from Cambridge

Frederick Sanger was one of the heroes of my childhood.

I admired his sharp intellect, his perseverance when
working in his basement lab and analyzing insulin, his
modesty and, of course, his achievement of receiving two
Nobel Prizes.

As soon as this book was published, I sent him a copy

by courier on the off chance he would read it, not really
expecting a reply.

Four months later, a hand-written letter by the then

87-year-old arrived.

If you are a student reading this, be aware that Fred

Sanger would have loved to be one of you!
After all, the biotech revolution has just begun.
I wish you good luck, success, and a happy journey of
discovery!
