Response Paper #4
Both The Allegory of the Cave by Plato and Corn Pone Opinions by Mark Twain
deal with how people form opinions and what they do with them. But whereas The Allegory of
the Cave focused on what happens when people are shown a truer picture of the world, Corn
Pone Opinions focuses on why people form opinions that have nothing to do with logic and
reason.
Plato was of the opinion that once people see real truth they will not want to go back to
the fools who do not see the greater light. Mark Twain, however, believes that it is human nature
to conform to the views of the crowd, without even stopping to question if those views are
reasonable or not.
